Obituary of Hugh Harkins Canning

Dr. Hugh Harkins Canning, BA, DDS November 24, 1927 - July 1, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of our beloved Hugh on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at his much loved cottage on Lake Scugog. Hugh is predeceased by his father and mother Frank and Florence "Lovey" Canning and his cherished son Hughie. He is survived by his loving and beloved wife, Ann. Dear father of Ann Marie and her husband Peter, Michael and his wife Karen, and Ted and his wife Karen. Adored grandfather of Peter and his wife Amy, Katie and her husband Jeremy, Conner, Bridget, Blake, Paige, Burke, Brendan and Briar. Treasured great grandfather to Finn, Rhys, Meara and Ellie. Hugh attended high school at St. Michael's College School, completed his undergraduate degree at St. Michael's College at the University of Toronto, and following in his father's footsteps he graduated from Dentistry at U of T in 1954. Two weeks later on June 12, he married the love of his life Ann Sullivan and they enjoyed 60 glorious years together. Hugh truly enjoyed life to the fullest. He will be dearly missed by all his friends at The Toronto Hunt where he was a fixture on the golf course, at the bridge table and in the dining room. Whether exploring the city with the Walking Stick Club, socializing at Highgate or enjoying a roquet on the Scugog croquet course, Hugh's zest for life was infectious to all around him. He enjoyed a thriving dental practice at Queen and Yonge for 45 years where he developed lifelong friendships with his patients and made a lasting impression on many. Hugh donated his time and professional talents to the Ontario Dental Association and the Catholic Children's Aid Society and was an active member, along with Ann, in his local Catholic community. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2014. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in ST. BONAVENTURE'S CHURCH, 1300 Leslie Street at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2014. Interment Mount Hope Cemetery.
