Obituary of Margaret Shapiro

Margaret Eleanor (Penny) Shapiro (nee Bigelow) 1921 - 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eleanor (Penny to friends) in her 93rd year. She fought with great courage and determination to regain speech and mobility after a massive debilitating stroke 8 years previously, and suffered multiple smaller strokes in her last 2 years. She was able to remain in her apartment until the end, with family at her bedside. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 49 years, John Shapiro, and by her parents Harold and Margaret Bigelow. She leaves her loving daughters Janet and Judy, brother Bob (Jessie), sister Kay, nieces and nephews Tom, Bill, Ron, Michael (Dianna), Victoria (Tom) and Robert (Angie) and extended family Mark, Natalie and Curtis. Eleanor attended public and high school in Millbrook, Ontario followed by normal school in Peterborough. She will be remembered as a dedicated primary school teacher with both the Toronto and Scarborough Boards of Education, and later in her career, a guidance councilor with the Scarborough Board. An avid duplicate bridge player and square dancer, and a lifelong fan of the Blue Jays baseball team, in later years she embraced the passion of ballroom dancing, competing and traveling with good friends. Penny's family would like to thank the invaluable occupational and physical therapy given by the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and NeuroLogic Physiotherapy (Nicole-Ottawa), the excellent nursing care provided by staff at the Thorncliffe Place Senior's Residence, Colonel By Retirement Residence (Ottawa), and the moral support and social outings offered by the Stroke Survivors Association of Ottawa. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES CHAPEL LIMITED, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 1:00 - 3:00 P.M. Saturday, June 21 for a memorial reception. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
