Gordon B. Cummings It is indeed with shock and sadness that I learned of Gord's sudden passing. Over the last 20 years he has been a true business friend at DS dealing with both my wife's and my accounts. Several years ago I arranged for him and his friends to get my tickets to the Masters in Augusta, Georgia. As Masters time is again approaching I was just recently thinking of Gord the other day and how much he told me he enjoyed seeing that wonderful venue. I know how much he liked his golf. [I met and interacted with Gord from 1974 to 1979 at Leaside High School. We had several classes together, notably gym classes, but didn't compete on the same organized school or non-school sports teams.]
It was through conversations with Gord [most frequently in Mr. Christopher's Grade 11 History class] and, more significantly, observing his efforts and achievements "in the heat of sports battles", that he conveyed to me the difference between simple casual sports participation [i.e. "SHOWING UP"] and team leadership/intense competition [i.e. "CONTRIBUTING SIGNIFICANTLY TO POSITIVE RESULTS"]. The "bigger lesson" that he shared (and obviously lived by) was to commit and give your full attention and best effort to anything and everything that you choose to pursue or confronts you.
A highly memorable specific event in my teenage life was the day that Gord selected me as his first pick to join a Grade 12 gym class team to compete in various sports throughout the entire school term. Definitely I wasn't the most athletically gifted or multiple sports experienced, so his choosing me was quite surprising (to both me and others). After the class, when I asked him why he had chosen me first rather than someone from his "closer circle of friends" or any of numerous better natural athletes in the class, he [with a slight smirk and twinkle in his eye] expressed his intention to compete well in all gym class sports events, and consequently to identify and team up with select classmates who shared his determination and drive to apply best efforts and fully compete on an ongoing basis.
I considered then, and to this day still consider his "recognition" and "acceptance" of me as a worthy teammate and co-competitor, as significant and greatly appreciated.
I truly regret that I didn't have an opportunity in later years to share recollections and fond memories with, and convey my admiration, respect and appreciation to Gord.

Gord… Your Husband. Your Dad. My Boss. Referencing Gord as simply my boss, however, would be an injustice. He was much more than that to me, including: - a mentor - a great listener - an educator - a motivator - an inspiration - a model investment advisor - the best boss/co-worker I’ve ever had - a friend Despite only working with him (he would never allow me to say I worked FOR him) for slightly over a year in 2003/2004, while Kerri was on maternity leave, he had a profound impact on my life personally and professionally. I am honored to have known your husband and father and I’m grateful for the opportunity he provided me many years ago when I walked into his office for an interview at the age of 22. I often tell people my days with Gord was the best job I’ve had and I mention I would have worked with him again for next to nothing. He was that kind of person. He had a way of making me feel comfortable in any situation as evidenced by my first ever client lunch. The lunch was with Gord, along with a client, at the Granite Club. The client previously raved about the wines at the Club and suggested we sit on the patio with him and share a bottle over lunch. Knowing I didn’t particularly have a palette for wine at 22, Gord casually suggested it would also be a nice day for a beer, saving me from cringing with every sip of wine. He was that kind of person. Remembering your names -- Gillian, Olivia, and Madeleine -- 10+ years after working with Gord is a testament to how often he spoke of you and the priority he placed on his family. The pride exuded when speaking about all of you is something I hope to feel one day when I have a family of my own. Gord has remained in my thoughts over the past decade and I’m sure those thoughts aren’t soon to pass. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Best regards, Mike
