Nicola, Paul and Diana - I have just written a message when the text went out, so I don't know if it got there or not. I will write it again. The news of Barbara's death came as a great shock. I last talked to her on the phone in July and she was the first friend we were going to have in for dinner after my recovery from my flu virus. Barbara, Bernard, Sandy and I go back a long time. Many happy memories come flodding back, particularly Paul and Diana's wedding. I don't know if you knew that it's thanks to Barbara that I graduated from U. of T. with distinction. She helped me with my English essays and my English translations. Bernard called it cheating, but I learnt a lot from her and finally was able to write without her belp. Barbara was the only friend I invited to my graduation in 1998. I will miss her. She was a good friend. Love to you all and deepest sympathy. Gloria

On behalf of the staff of Toronto Botanical Garden, I extend our deepest sympathies to the entire Mayer family on their sad loss. Barbara Mayer was gracious, generous and kind--a long-time member, supporter and champion of the TBG. She is remembered with both gratitude and fondness, and sincerely mourned by her many friends here. Aldona Satterthwaite, Executive Director, Toronto Botanical Garden

Hi Nicola, So very sorry to have lost a good friend, one of the few 70-something people I know with a sense of humour! We had things planned, how could she go so unexpectedly? Of late, she was very proud of you starting your new job, and how the company asked you to 'accept' them, instead of the other way around. We also talked about your new house and, of course, baby Mathew and the new Mayer baby. Barbara was, as usual, interested in what was going to happen next, always optimistic. We can learn from that attitude. Romi 416-565-504
