Obituary of Helen Janetakes
Helen Janetakes
(1915 - 2013)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our cherished sister and aunt, on Wednesday, October 30, just short of her 98th birthday. Born in Philadelphia to Michael and Politeme Janetakes, Helen was brought to Toronto as a young child with her older brother, John Milton (d. 2007), and remained a devoted Torontonian her entire life. She was the beloved sister of Evelyn 'Kia' Botteas; sister-in-law of Bill Botteas and of Kalliope 'Kally' Janetakes; treasured "Auntie" to Peter Bottéas of Boston, Michael Janetakes (Norma Sexsmith) and Joan Janetakes; much-loved great-aunt of Jason Janetakes (Stefanie Cafua) and Janice Janetakes (Shimmy Silverman); and adored by many friends and extended-family members. Helen was a valued employee of Ontario Hydro for over three decades, devoted much time in the 1950s and 1960s to aid and advocate for the poor and disenfranchised of the Greek community, and was known for her cheerful disposition, good humour, and boundless energy, and her kind and compassionate spirit.
The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES CHAPEL LIMITED, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 1. Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Saturday, November 2 at 10:00 a.m. Interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
