It was the spring of 1981 that I met Dr Wigle, having been refered to him from my Doctor in Saint John New Brunswick..This was the start of what was to be a 25 year relationship with the most caring and thoughtful person I had ever met,but very firm.In 1982 I was further diagnosed with coranary problems leading to bypass surgery in early 1983.I visited Dr Wigle each and every year until 2006.I can recall him coming into my hospital room and making sure I got out of bed or else.We had become good friends over the years and after his examination we would always have a long chat about everything and anything.
I will always for the rest of my life give thanks for having the pleasure of meeing this fine person and for having him as my inspiration for all those years and the good health I have enjoyed.

Under the watchful eye of Dr. Wigle, I reported annually for my visit for a battery of tests for years following the death of my brother, Scott 1978 who passed from familial cardiomyopathy. On November 4th, 1997, he informed me that I needed a heart transplant. During my journey over the following year, I shared many humorous moments with Dr. Wigle. He teased me relentlessly over the fact that as an RN, I did not recognize that my symptoms were leading me to a transplant. While living in hospital, he granted me leave to go shopping with a friend and to my spouse's Christmas company party. He recognized that mindbodysoul relationship was an integral connection to wellness. My fondest memory was during the time I lived in the CCICU tethered to my bed with multiple lines. He arrived in my room with an number of medical students. Dr. Wigle began drilling questions at the med students about my disease and current status. As these students stood dumbfounded for several seconds, I raised my hand gestering that I knew the answers to all his questions. He responded with a laugh and said yes, Sue I know you know the answers, and then scolded the students for letting a patient show them up. He chose not to tell them I was an RN.
Its been almost 15years since my heart transplant. After transplant, I returned to school and obtained my BScN and later my Masters in Nursing. I now teach nursing for McMaster University. I live a full and rich life in part due to the excellent care of Dr. Wigle. I will remember always.

As physician-in-chief of the Toronto General Hospital and as Dean of the University of Toronto, I had many interactions with Dr. Doug Wigle and I came to him many times for advice. He was always a source of support and wise counsel. As a clinician, teacher, mentor and investigator, Doug was an exemplar of an academic cardiologist. Doug had many opportunities to advance his career in other academic centres. The UofT and the TGH are truly fortunate that he chose Toronto. May his family be comforted by the esteem afforded to his memory by his many colleagues in Ontario, Canada and throughout the academic world.

It was my privilege to know Doug Wigle when I was a trainee and junior staff at Toronto General. He was the finest clinician, teacher, and researcher I knew. He was also my friend and I will sadly miss him.

Anne Doug meant so much to the cardiovascular community in Canada and I agree with the statement that he was the father of modern cardiology in Canada. He left a lasting impression of the clinical fundamentals and what excellence is and should be demonstrated with each and every patient. He also helped many of us with career choices. Later on, he was very kind and supportive in our career choices. I will miss him and think of him often. My thoughts are with you Anne at this difficult time.

On behalf of the Division of Cardiology in Ottawa, we want to express our sadness regarding the loss of Dr Doug Wigle. Dr Wigle was a mentor to many of our division members and a leader in Cardiology in Canada and the world. His clinical approach, his research and teaching all shaped the lives of his patients, his colleagues and his trainess, all for the better. He was instrumental in the development of our Division in Ottawa through mentorship, clinical and research collaborations. More than this he was a friend to many of us here. He will be deeply missed. We wish our deepest sympathies to the Wigle family and also to his friends in the Cardiology Division at the Toronto General.

I greatly admired Doug as a physician and as a mentor. He was Division director when I joined in 1973, but more important than that he was my examiner for the Royal College exams in Cardiology in 1972! Many memories since. He was a great man! My condolences to the family. May you be strengthened by your own fond memories!
