Obituary of George Theodore Rogers

George Theodore [Ted] Rogers, Q.C., B.A., LL.B. 1914 - 2013 Ted died June 22nd at the Toronto East General Hospital in his 100th year. He is survived by Fern, his cherished wife and best friend of 71 years; his beloved daughter Susan Donaldson [Bill] and son Robert [Carla]; loving grandchildren, Leanne Donaldson, Michael Donaldson [Krista] and Andrea Donaldson [Robert]; and great grandchildren Avery, Graydon and Theo. Predeceased by his brothers Dr. Rolph Meredith Rogers [Madeline] and Professor William Selby Rogers [Marjory]. Ted loved people - was interested in their stories and in sharing a few of his own. He was especially blessed with a strong streak of old-fashioned common sense. Recipients of his advice and efforts were his clients at the law firm of Rogers, Smith, Dick and Thomson, the Board of Directors of the Toronto East General Hospital and the Hospital's Foundation where he served as Honorary Life Member. Ted also served as Past President of the Riverdale Kiwanis Club and was a life member and Past Master of Acacia Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. No. 430. He was a founding Director of Thompson House and Taylor Place in Don Mills, served on the Board of Governors of Trinity College School, Port Hope and was President of the Riverdale District Social Planning Council and Vice President of the Social Planning Council of Metropolitan Toronto. Ted was also a charter member and director of the Donalda Club. It was a mystery to many that there was any time left for pastimes. But such was not the case. Since 1921 Ted loved the time spent in Muskoka: first at the family's Mary Lake cottage and later at Grandview. He enjoyed golf, canoeing, fishing and sailing and puttering around outdoors. This love of skillful tinkering he passed along to both his son and his grandson. A private family service has been held. A Celebration of Life will be held in the DONALDA CLUB, 12 Bushbury Drive, Don Mills on Monday, July 15th from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Toronto East General Hospital Foundation, 825 Coxwell Avenue, Toronto M4C 3E7 or the Riverdale Kiwanis Club Charitable Foundation, 3555 Danforth Avenue, Toronto M1L 1E3. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
