Many a Wednesday afternoon I spent on the Distress Centre helpline with Derek. In the traditions of that service, we went by first names, and I never even knew his last name until I was informed of his passing by the Distress Centre staff. Derek was an old hand at calls, and could generate dialogue with anyone. He also had a determined spirit and strongly held views. The practice of the phone room was to leave a small stipend if one took a beverage from the refrigerator. Not Derek! He explained to me that he believed strongly that volunteers should be entitled to a refreshment if they are spending their free time providing service to distressed callers. He definitely did his bit, in that service, and many others. My condolences to the family. May he rest in peace.

Hollis served as Rector of St. John's York Mills for 17 years, and Derek was a faithful servant of his God - not only in worship, but also through his care of other human beings. His wonderful stories and his committment to a task conjure many wonderful memories for all of us. Helen and Hollis give thanks for Derek's life, and remember his family and friends during this time of sadness.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Stodart through his wonderful daughter Lesley with whom I attended university. He was always Mr Stodart to me as was fitting such the fine English gentleman that he was. It was wonderful to read about his life as he was an inspiration to all. It is sad to hear he has passed away but I take great comfort knowing he was well looked after and loved by his family.

Dear Stodart Family, I am terribly sorry to hear the news of Derek passing on, please accept my sincere condolences. I've known Derek since 1992 and often remember the good times we used to have at our Trans-Lux Canada sales office. I can only pray to God to give your family the strength and courage to cope with this loss. I will miss Derek dearly as he was a mentor to me over the years. Regards, Dennis A.
