Condolences once again to Pat and the family as the one year anniversary of Peter's passing comes around. My PhD thesis, on the last ten years of the Ryerson Press, has been submitted but not defended yet. The dedication reads as follows:
This PhD dissertation is dedicated to the memory of Peter Gordon White, Editor-in-Chief of the United Church of Canada's massive New Curriculum project, who set me on this trail in the first place. He died the year I finished this dissertation. Peter was a dear colleague, mentor, and friend, and will always be remembered and missed.

It is with love and many treasured reminiscences that I write this note of unexpressible condolance. Both Dr. Peter and Dr. Pat have been some of the most beloved of God's creatures, sprading caring, empathy, true compassion and stunning intelligence to and among those whose lives
touched theirs. I am grateful for the time and influence Dr. Peter
left in our hearts and development. My prayers, faith and deepest
sympathies go to Dr. Pat and their wonderful family. Love endures forever. Carol and Grant

Working with Peter at the United Church Publishing House from 1994-1998 has certainly been the highlight of my book publishing career so far. I also have him to thank for my current PhD dissertation topic, looking at the last ten years of the Ryerson Press. The dissertation will, of course, be dedicated to him. I was very very very lucky to see Peter one last time this past February. I've just had a very good cry on hearing about his death, and I will miss him always. There were so many more things I wanted to ask him and tell him. I just bought a copy of his New Curriculum (NC) book, The Mystery of the Rock and hoped he would sign it for me. I also just found -- just this past Easter Sunday -- a HUGE stash of NC books at our church in Chesterville. He is not dead whose influence lingers on so strongly. Rest in Peace Peter as a faithful servant to both God and humankind. -- Ruth

Doug and I and our family offer deeply felt condolences to you, Pat, and to your famiy. Catching a conversation with Peter Gordon last spring at Rosedale was our last time to be blessed in person by his wisdom and grace. He began with "I don't think we need to be worried about the survival of the church", and proceeded with a fantastic history of times over the centuries when folks were sure the church was finished... before it was resurrected once again. When I was a young adult serving in the General Council office (youth ministry) he was serving in the Division of Ministry, Personnel & Education, and he was my first teacher about the history of rock 'n roll. I thought he was so cool - and still do. He has touched our family over the generations. I remember my grandparents (when I was as a child), reading The Word and the Way. I will be forever grateful for his encouragement and kindnesses offered to me, most recently during my term as Moderator, and to our son Chris and daughter in law Claire who have come to know you, as members of Rosedale United. Peter Gordon's fascination with the dying of old forms/media into the new has me reflecting on how he will now be with us in new ways, and yet sadness remains, for your loss and for the loss of the church. We will miss his intellect, pedagogy, humour and compassion. Yet we are not alone... Thanks be to God. Mardi Tindal, 40th Moderator, The United Church of Canada

Dear Pat and Family, I am looking at a photo of Peter with a group of young people, perhaps a communicants' class, outside Bloor St. Church .Included is my daughter Kathy also John Tinker, Maureen Gillies, Jennifer Spears, and I think, Guillet sisters. Of course my own memories of Peter are imprinted in my heart. He encouraged us teen agers in so many ways to explore our beliefs and learn together about who we were and what we could become. We felt safe and nourished as well as challenged. With some reluctance we accepted Pat and even went to the wedding. My parents (Bob and Evelyn Charles) took an interest in the New Curriculum and the dear person responsible for its creation. How fortunate that three generations were blessed with fun and wisdom Peter provide in his invitation to seek God. Three generations touched by this beautiful man. Thanks. Our love and sympathy go to you and all the family, Kay (Smythe-Davies)

Dear Pat. We were so sorry to hear about Peter’s passing and deeply regret that we will be unable to attend his funeral as we will still be out of the country. I first learned of Peter when teaching the New Curriculum and was delighted to finally meet him when we joined Rosedale. He was unfailingly friendly, wise, gracious, interested in others and always with a smile on his face. Even when his physical health was failing, he continued bright and interested in others. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family as you celebrate a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. Judy and Larry

The tone of these tributes says a good deal about Peter. As for me, Peter nurtured my growth... as a person, as an activist, as a thinker, as an educator. I was blessed by his friendship and support in the 1960s and '70s. And, I stand in his debt, still, especially for the easy way he shared, not only his views, but his person. I am thankful to have known him as a mentor and friend.

I was privileged to be in my young adult years during the New Curriculum. Peter Gordon loomed large during those times as exemplary educator and theologian in his belief that children, youth and adults would benefit from an informed faith and that being a church educator was a a profound ministry. Gentle in spirit, he contributed intelligent and wise leadership and ministry to The United Church of Canada. My deep sympathy to you, Patricia, and to your family. To the family and friends of Peter Gordon White, My sincerest condolences and solidarity. What a full and productive life to be celebrated. I knew Peter in the era of the Board of Christian Education in the United Church as a youth activist and President of the Young People's Union, later KAIROS. Then we went through the organizational changes leading to the Division of Mission in Canada, with which I worked as staff for eighteen years. Peter's warm good humour, his sense of the positive, the light-filled is represented in the smiling photo on this site. The years were not necessarily easy times, controversy always hovered, but much was created and produced, and hundreds of thousands of children and young people were introduced to Christianity and the church in the materials and through the spirit which informed the work of Christian Education in the church. As a place of work, of dialogue and conference, of creativity and of reflection, the national office of the United Church in the era of the 60s-80s which I experienced was a very positive space, and Peter's light illuminated so much of what was done and how it was done. With sincere appreciation, John W. Foster (Dr.) Ottawa, ON
