Some years ago I saved and put away a bunch of Globe and Mail 'Life' sections; I didn't have time to read them at the time, but definitely wanted to. Fast forward 10 years, a new house, a revealed box, and some leisure time. I found Ed's witty yet sobering essay on having 'the last word', and was intrigued enough to follow up. I guess I was hoping I wouldn't find this obituary dated so soon after the piece was published.
Please know Ed made one more friend, and reminded her to take advantage of every day.
May his memory always be a blessing.

Worked with Ed for years going back to the Scarborough office. Then when Ed ran the Call Centre I reunited during those years. Ed always made everyone laugh and was such a great personality. So glad that we attended his retirement get together as he was so surprised to see Lucy and I show up. Great memories Ed. God will take care of you Ed and you are at peace now.

Lyn I met Sharon Harker at the Pickering Town Centre yesterday and she told me the sad news about Ed. I wanted to let you know how sorry I am to hear this news. I always enjoyed Ed's great sense of humour (a little warped at times!) and his kind nature. I have experienced first hand the pain of losing someone that you have loved for so long and I wanted you to know that I am thinking about you. Lucy Ross

The world is not the same without Ed. He has left a positive impression on all the lives he has touched. He had a great career and was well respected by those that worked closely with him. Has always been charitable. After retirement he was briefly an ambassador of Toronto to many visitors who loved his spin on the city. He is an inspiration to me for how to face adversity. He taught me that with love and humour we can face anything life throws at us a little easier.

To Ed's family, my deepest condolences on your lost. As many have said before me, in life you don't meet too many people like Ed Shannon. He was a special man who knew how to take the time to get to know people. I would like to share a quote about creating happiness that Ed shared with me in 2008. It says it all.
"Smile, laugh, stand tall, act lively & give hugs. Act as if you are confident, optimistic, and outgoing. You'll manage adversity, rise to the occasion, create instant connections, make friends and influence people and become a happier person".

Ed, you will always be remembered by how much you were able to make me laugh. June 5th, our birthday will not be the same this year-but I will continue to raise a toast to us. I will continue to remember all of the good times John and I shared with you, all of your stories and the look in your eyes and that slight smirk, when I knew you were not exactly telling the truth or were trying to tell me another "story". You will always be remembered in this house as "Shannon-man" or "Shannon T"! Enjoy the next chapter of your life. "Go Habs Go"

True to his Irish heritage Ed's story-telling abilities and mischievous sense of humour were legendary. Here's one of my favourites. When Ed was much younger his hero was Roy Rogers the King of the Cowboys. Ed heard that Roy would send an autographed picture to 'special' children. Ed wrote to Roy saying that his fondest wish was that he could ride a horse like Trigger but alas... since he was in a wheelchair due to polio his wish would never come true. Several weeks later a picture arrived with the inscription; 'To little Eddie from Roy & Trigger'. Ed; my final words to you are: 'Happy trails to you...until we meet again'.

Having the extraordinary privilege of getting to know Ed and Lyn over the past few years, I can honestly say that Ed truly was, one-of-a-kind!!
He was so full of life and love, and of course, a plethora of entertaining stories, that each meeting with him was one to remember. Through his brilliant example, Ed managed to teach others that no matter the challenge, big or small, to hold on to the many gifts that life has to offer, essentially, a message of hope and courage. Thanks for everything Ed!
My thoughts are with you Lyn, you were certainly an incredible co-pilot to one of the greats!

Ed, you taught me that my job could be a career that I love. You mentored me with good old fashion logic and above all friendship. You accepted me and encouraged me to be open and myself with co-workers and colleagues. I can never repay you for eveything you taught me. You taught me to experience life, to eat the food, drink the wine, appreciate the arts and never say no to travel those lessons have proven invaluable. Our discussions on travel and food were my favourite.
Where ever you are now I know that your pulling stunts, making people laugh and hopefully enjoying a beer in the sun, reading a good book!
I love you and will miss you buddy. XO

Ed, you were truly a joy to know. You were our sunshine on the dark days. You always had a good story to tell and a hearty recollection of some hilarious incident. We laughed and laughed until we cried - until the kids said, "Elizabeth, what's wrong with your face?" You were good medicine to all who knew you. Every time I look up from my crossing corner to your veranda, I will still see your smiling face and hear your laugh. Your memory will bring joy to my day still.
Now I light this prayer candle to say: The Lord bless you Ed, and watch, guard & keep you until we meet again. The Lord make His face to shine upon you and have everlasting mercy on you Ed. The Lord turn his approving countenance upon you Ed, and grant you his complete shalom continually. Amen

You can live close to people for years and never know them, but Ed seemed to know everyone. He seemed to share a connection with everyone he met. He loved Julia's pastries, shared the love of cool junk with Matt, he and John always had a story to share and I love that he loved my family.
