Obituary of Golub Golubov
GOLUB GOLUBOV
Golubov passed away peacefully, on Monday, January 14, 2013, at home in Toronto, in his 90th year.
He was born in Grulska Padena, Bulgaria on January 22, 1923, the first of three children of Jordan Golubov Ivanoff and Lata Latinka. He grew up in Dragoman and attended The American College in Sofia for high school. He was prevented from completing his engineering degree at The University of Sofia Saint Klement Ohridsky by the communist regime.
Golub fled the communist oppression with his family, including his ill father, on the moonless night of February 25, 1949. Sadly, his father died in Trieste, Italy during their three-year journey. His search for freedom brought him to Canada, arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax on January 8, 1952, accompanied by his sister and brother, while his mother waited in Bremenhaven to join them later.
In Canada he met and married Violet Butseff. Together they worked in Toronto at the family business Gay-Lure Lingerie, for over 50 years.
He was a dedicated father to their three children, Lydia (Tom), Jordan (Jean), and Evan (Lisa). He was a selfless father who put the needs of his family above all else. Golub took great pleasure as Dedo to his seven grandchildren, Stephanie, Brendan, Laura, Julia, Peter, Francesca and Simona. He was the older brother and wise counsel to his "kid" brother Dimitar (Hilda) and his late sister Ceca (and the late Lubo).
The family cottage in Muskoka is a special place that was very dear to Golub. Family and friends shared stories, politics, laughter, endless activities and beautiful sunsets over Mirror Lake. A newspaper was never far from his side. Many summer evenings ended with a glass of prosecco and a toast - "Na Zdrave," "Good Health."
He enjoyed many trips to Mexico and a liberated Bulgaria, which were opportunities to share time with his family and old friends. Nothing mattered more to Golub than his family. He was a sound and steady presence.
His wisdom, support and love will be missed by his family and close friends.
The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES CHAPEL LIMITED, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Friday, January 18. Service in the chapel on Saturday, January 19 at one o'clock. Interment Pine Hills Cemetery.
