Morag Gilchrist

Obituary of Morag Gilchrist

Dr. Morag MacMillan Gilchrist Peacefully at Humber River Regional Hospital on Thursday, December 20, 2012. Predeceased by her parents James and Jean Gordon Gilchrist, her husband Nelson Tutt, siblings Gordon and Christina, and nephew Peter Matthews. She is mourned by her sister and best friend Jean Matthews, brother Donald (Christiane), nieces and nephews Rosalie Rufelds, Christopher (Liz) Matthews, Nancy Ann, Donald (Jeanne) and Jean Gilchrist and their families. Born in Toronto on April 14, 1925, Morag attended Brown School and Oakwood Collegiate. Although she missed a year of school because of infantile paralysis, she persevered and graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1948. She gained her specialty in pediatrics and won her medical "M" for athletics. Morag had a practice for many years on Baby Point Road in Toronto and was on the staffs of Sick Children's, St. Joseph's and Holland Bloorview hospitals. She was known as a gifted diagnostician and for her skill and dedication to her patients, zooming off to the hospital or a house call at all hours in her powerful Pontiac convertibles. Morag had a mischievous sense of humour, which livened up every conversation and, from time to time, got her in trouble. She was a faithful Anglican who attended services every Sunday, at least until her devotion was redirected to her Golden Retrievers, English Setters and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. In her latter years, after decades of encouragement from her sister, she also took an interest in watching figure skating. In sum, Morag was diligent, truthful (to a fault) and always good company. She will be missed. A memorial service will be held in ST. JAMES CATHEDRAL, 65 Church Street (at King Street), Toronto on Friday, December 28th at 11:00 a.m. If desired, donations to SickKids Foundation are welcomed.
