In 1979 and 1997 I visited uncle Ton and aunt Lydia with my sister Carla. Both times we were greeted very warmly and we felt very at home. Both times we had a great time, in Toronto as well as on the farm. We were very lucky to meet our cousins as well. In addition, I was very glad that I called him three weeks before his passing and had a long conversation with him in which I felt his warm personality as well as his interest in the on-goings in the Netherlands. I want to offer my condolences to my cousins and wish them the strength to cope with the loss of such a warm personality.
Kind regards,
Ad van Ede

Tony was a gentle, wise herdsman and a one of a kind neighbour. We were fortunate to share a short time of friendship and I admired his stewardship for the land and his animals. I enjoyed learning about him and appreciated his love for his family. His work ethic and dedication to his passion for farming made all of his tasks at hand look effortless. I will miss walking up the field to assess his new calf with him, the phone calls about his livestock or family news, and his kind soft spoken greeting. Our meeting was a special gift. Although our friendship was cut short his life will leave an imprint on the rest of mine and my family’s life. Tony brought out the best in me. He showed me how to CARE.
C is for comradery not complaining
A is for adaptability not angry
R is for respect not regret
E is for earnest not erratic
I will raise my family with some of the qualities that Tony taught me:
Comradery, adaptability, respect, and an earnest passion for country living.

When my sister and l were 18 ( in 2001 ) we decided to have a summer holiday in Canada.
First we where two weeks in Toronto and in Sunderland with uncle Tony and Lidia and our cousins.
We had a marvelous time over there. Douglas and Jill teached us water skiing, Lisa and Diane took us to Canadian Wonderland and together with uncle Tony we took the hay in.
Later l have been in Sunderland with my husband and children visiting uncle Tony. Aunt Lidia was not there anymore.
He was the youngest brother of my mother. Haven’t seen him often in my life.
But l have very good memories of him what about my holidays.
Your cousin Marian from Holland

We were sadden to hear of the passing of Tony. When we first moved to the neighbourhood we met Tony and Lydia while they were checking their cows and calves. Its hard not to think of Tony without thinking about his love of farming, raising calfs and keeping his cows. On behalf of our family, please accept our sincere condolences to your family. Ken and Heather Robertson and family.

22 years ago, I bought the adjacent property to the east of Tony's farm. Needing a temporary driveway for the well drilling truck, I had a big load of gravel dumped in the ditch. Well, I showed up with my little shovel after work, and soon realized I had a good 3 or 4 hours or more of work ahead of me to make a usable entrance. Tony soon arrived with his tractor and made short work of the gravel pile. That day he proved to be a good neighbour and a gentleman. Its been a pleasure, Tony. Rest in piece.

Close the Gate (For Dad)
For this one farmer the worries are over, lie down and rest your head,
Your time has been and struggles enough, put the tractor in the shed.
Years were not easy, many downright hard, but your faith in God transcended,
Put away your tools and sleep in peace. The fences have all been mended.
You raised a fine family, worked the land well and always followed the Son,
Hang up your shovel inside of the barn; your work here on earth is done.
A faith few possess led your journey through life, often a jagged and stony way,
The sun is setting, the cattle are all bedded, and here now is the end of your day.
Your love of God’s soil has passed on to your kin; the stories flow like fine wine,
Wash off your work boots in the puddle left by blessed rain one final time.
You always believed that the good Lord would provide and He always had somehow,
Take off your gloves and put them down, no more sweat and worry for you now.
Your labor is done, your home now is heaven; no more must you wait,
Your legacy lives on, your love of the land, and we will close the gate
