Ron - your son-in-law lit a candle

This letter is for Alfred - my Mentor.
You accepted me into your family at the age of 16. You passed your first daughter Lynda on to me when she was 21, I was 23. Like many young newlyweds we had our problems and went our separate ways 4 years later. After a 13 year hiatus we were reunited and once again you welcomed me back into your family. Never a question asked, never a negative comment. Although Iv'e never been a soldier in a war, it felt like one of those welcome home son-in-law moments.
I began dating your daughter at a time when I was expieriencing a troubled father/son relationlationship in my own home. From day one, I respected and admired your father role at 200 and you quickly became my Mentor. The guy I wanted to learn from, the man I needed in my life.
Now I'm 65 and happily remarried to your daughter and throughout all of these years you have remained my mentor. The guy who loves his family, always looking out for everyone's best interest, thier happiness and success in life. The guy who never gave up.
Even when you became paralyzed with a tortorous stroke, you moved on. You fought the odds of success. Silently, you continued to provide leadership and direction and even more silently you continued to mentor me. Perhaps unknowingly, you set the example for me to follow for the rest of my life.
You lived on for another 12 years. You remained and always will remain the "Head of the Family", the Dad, the Father that as hard as it is to say - the Father I never had, MY MENTOR!
I Love You Alfred.
Sicerely,
Ron

Dad/Alfred our guiding light, you were like the sun to us, a sure thing, always there, beaming light and warmth on our lives. You guided us with your wisdom, your patience, your strength and your love. You taught us by example, as a role model, how to be our own person and how to believe in ourselves. You are our hero, our secure foundation, holding a place of honour deep within our hearts. Without you we would not be the couple we are today. We respect you, we admire you, we love you, Dad/Alfred our guiding light.

The world lost a great man November 1, 2012. Dad, we could not have asked for a better example of a father and grandfather. Your strength and unconditional love has set the bar for how we will all live our lives from here forward. You will be missed, but please know that you have left behind a life rich with wonderful memories and a family that is so, so proud of you. We love you dad/grandpa, thank you for doing such a great job and being the man we can only hope to be. Rest in peace knowing your work here has been done.

I was saddened to hear the news of the passing of Uncle Alf. I have many fond childhood memories of the Christmases our families shared. To coin one of my mother's phrases Alf was 'one of the good ones.' He will be missed.
