Jesus said to her, " I am the resurrection and the life . He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. (John 11 25-26) Michelle, I just wanted to drop you a note to express my deepest sympathy to you and your family. Gregory always remembers your instruction to him as a teacher at North Bendale. He always hoped that you would have a son so that you would know "what it was like to have boys". May the life lessons learned and the support of both family and friends as well as The love of our savior sustain you through this time. "You're in a better place. I've heard them say. And at least a thousand times I've rejoiced for you. But the reason why I cry and the reason why I sing is how long must I wait to be with you? I close my eyes and I see your face. If home is where my heart is then I am out of place. Oh Lord please give me strength to make it through some how. I've never been more home sick than now. In Christ there are no good byes...until we meet again (Homesick ,Mercy Me)" Brian, Marlene, Gregory, Emma, Isobel, Julia Carrington

Roger, Pat and Family, It was with tremendous shock and sadness that I learned of Darren's passing this week. I had not seen Darren in probably 25+ years, but the memories of growing up on Columbus Crescent, football scrimmages with Darren and Roger, babysitting the girls and delivering The Tribune to the Barnabe house will be with me forever. I can't possibly imagine the anguish you feel at this time. Just know that your "old" friends and neighbors are sharing a piece of that pain with you and we have you in our thoughts and prayers. My son Daniel and Dana first met when they were toddlers at the YMCA Daycare. In those days Michelle and I would scurry off in the mornings dropping the kids and rushing to work. On occassion Darren would either drop off or pick up and we joked about Dana and the fixation she had on our son...she was out to get him...marry him one day! And so years later, we end up at St. Gabriel School and Dana and Daniel continue to be best of friends and share in many classes....although sitting on him to get his attention was soon stopped! On a few occassions that the families have gotten together for dinners, we'd all joke about the wedding, and Denis and Darren would make sure that the financials would be taken care of. As the kids grew, we continued to be part of this special family, watched as both beautiful daughters grew, glanced at their dad, beaming away as we were entertained at school in theatre productions and were thrilled to see a new arrival with Jesse, the young boy who would grow tall and strong like his dad, I admired Darren's strength as he learned of his disease..he was a fighter and he fought every day to win this battle. I continue to marvel at Michelle, her strength her tenacity, she's been the rock for Darren especially, the entire family and those of us lucky enough to have her as a friend. I felt guilty earlier this year to invite her out for a coffee to hear about how Darren was doing and to turn the conversation over to me and my life and how stressed I was feeling...I had nothing to complain about. We will continue to be here, to help in any way we can, and we have made a promise to Darren to watch over his beautiful family....if that means that a wedding in the future is pending, well then we'll all see you there and think about Darren and his great big smile hopefully approving of his son-in-law. Love, Sunny

I remember meeting Darren for the first time, last year, at the final staff meeting before we all left for the summer. He greeted me with a joke, in shorts and a t-shirt, at the side door of the school near the parking lot. He took me to open space and showed me a good place in which to set-up my classroom. He even showed me the little piece of metre stick that was holding up one of the blackboards so that it wouldn't fall off the wall entirely. Darren knew every inch of that room and probably knew every inch of the school. He lived to teach and he cared for the students and staff at Fairglen very much. Darren made me feel at home at Fairglen and we exchanged many funny emails about the Leafs and about our experiences as teachers...he also gave me many great pieces of advice. I met his wife Michelle at a PD session this year and she proved to be just as lively and strong as Darren. She was a lovely woman and she never made mention of his illness. We laughed together at stories about Darren and his antics. Darren touched the lives of many students, parents and staff at Fairglen. The Fairglen community has been praying for Darren for quite some time. Unfortunately for us who are left behind, the answer to prayer was not the one we were hoping for. I know I am not alone in saying that Darren Barnabe will be greatly missed. I will think about you all summer Darren, and I will be reminded of you, for the rest of my life, every time I see a teacher helping a student to succeed. - Ben Gordon Fairglen Junior Public School

I never met Darren, but through endless evening shifts worked with his proud mother Pat, I feel I got to know a bit about him. Patty, remember those nights at work when we would talk about everything and anything? I recall how proud you were of all your children, but Darren was your "Golden Boy". I remember you told me how you coached his football team and I thought, "now that's a devoted mom!" I remember how the two of you shared a love of WWF Wrestling and how he'd call you with results of matches you'd missed! Every time you went out to Toronto you came home with stories of your grandchildren and daughter in law too, always telling me how special they were to you, and all the cute things the kids did. For the past two years I cannot even imagine how you and your family has coped with Darren's illness and passing. Mothers are not supposed to bury their sons...yet the unthinkable does happen. Thank God for your loving and supportive family! During our last conversation I marvelled at your strength, and I hope you will find comfort in God, your family, friends, and most of all in cherishing and preserving Darren's memory for his children and others. I can just see Nanny telling them all those proud stories about their Dad that she told me many years ago. From Myself, Martin, Marina and Richie- we send heartfelt condolences to you and Roger and your family. Please know that if there is ever anything I can do, just ask.

Darren was a fine educator who will be dearly missed at Fairglen Junior Public school by the staff, students and the community. His dedication to his students was always evident. Darren was a fine role model who inspired students to reach their potential. His endearing smile, love of food gourmet or otherwise, good sportsmanship and sense of humour were just a few of the wonderful qualities that made being with him so enjoyable. Darren's spirit will live forever in our hearts.
