Dear Ann & Family: I have just belatedly learned of Randy's unexpected passing and wish to convey my family's thoughts and support to you and your children. Randy and I attended Hillfield-Strathallan Colleges for six years and graduated together in 1969. We shared innumerable happy (and frequently mischevious) times at HSC -- memories that have lasted a lifetime, particularly when I recall our time together working on the (infamous?) Boar-Pibroch yearbook or hatching nefarious schemes to master Grade 13 foreign languages! A majority of my life has been spent overseas and so I deeply regret not being able to keep in touch other than by the occasional Christmas card or letter. We send our thoughts and blessings for his wonderfully productive life and offer you and your children our support in this most difficult of times. Kindest Regards, Clifton W. Farrell

Hello Echlins. I have been thinking about you a lot and throughout the summer. Ann, it was amazing of you to visit with us last Thursday. You are the definition of resilient. It meant a lot to Dad and to me. I have such fond memories of babysitting Libby and Rob both on Airdrie Road and Bessborough Drive. Randy always treated me with respect and always had a smile for me. I love the message you left for us about Randy showing Mom around her new neighbourhood, Ann. Where there is mystery, there is possibility! In peace and friendship, Karen

Dear Ann I was so sorry to read about Randy's passing. The years fighting cancer must have been difficult for both of you. I trust Libby and Rob have been a great comfort to you in the last few months and will be in the future. You must have a great cache of memories of Randy and your life together. In that way he will always be with you. With deepest sympathy Dan

Although I was also a professional colleague of Randy's, I knew him (and his brothers and sister) first at a very young age back in the 1960s when our families had cottages on the same lake near Huntsville in Muskoka. Randy's uncle Ken Foreacre was also a member of the same teachers' poker club to which my father belonged. My family and I extend our condolences and best wishes to the entire Echlin family. Randy was fine judge and a great lawyer, as you all know. He is certainly much missed. Michael Watson

Dear Ann and Family, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. My father passed away this summer after a traffic accident and I understand the sorrow you are all facing on a daily basis. It is so hard to understand why those we are closest to are taken from us when we are not ready for them to go. I pray for comfort for you and your family as you deal with your husband's passing. I will be thinking of you. Colleen Drautz North Metro Chorus

I was greatly saddened to read of Randy's terribly premature death. I knew and liked him in law school, and had intermittent but agreeable contacts with him till a couple of years ago, when he invited me to write for his annual collection of articles on civil procedure. He was a very cordial editor, and he managed (with Justice Archibald) to put together a dozen first-rate collections of material - a serious contribution to the law. My sincere condolences to those he loved.

Ann, Libby, Rob and family. We were so saddened to here of Randy's turn for the worst in early August. Over the past 23 years we have totally enjoyed my many meetings with Randy in his offices at BLG as well as in his chambers in the court house. At each and every one he would challenge us to make sure his affairs were being managed well for all those peole he truly cared about. Then we would debate the broader world, conversations I totally enjoyed, through these moments you quickly learned Randy was a totally devoted and loving husband, a father who wanted nothing but the best opportunities for his children, a family man who worried and was concerned about his broader family all the time, a great friend, a true baseball nut and one of Canada's best of breed lawyers both before the bench and after when he served on the bench. Ann, the grief you and your family currently feel will, in time be partially replaced by the 100's of memories of Randy and the life you have shared with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. God bless.

I remember Randy Echlin as both a brilliant and charming student that I came to know through his photography work with the Hillfield-Strathallan College year book as he was responsible for photographing the Strathallan sports teams I coached in 1967 and 1968.
When we were married in Summer 1968 and were desparately needing a photographer, Randy was thrilled to take on the request and his pictures are among our valued family treasures
From Randy Echlin's graduation bio in 'The Boar-Pibroch 1969', "We are certain that his continual effort and ability will combine to make him a success in law at the University of Toronto this year".

I was so sorry to hear of Randy's death earlier this month. I have many warm memories of Randy's canvassing with me in 1988 - especially his willingness to start very early in the am and his excellent spirits early in the morning. I wish you the very best for the service on September 10th - unfortunately, I won't be able to participate, as I will be out of the province.

Dear Echlin Family: I was saddened to learn only yesterday of Randy's passing, having been abroad when this news was initially delivered. As a 14 year old boy in 1977 who was bitten by the baseball bug, I was befriended by a number of well meaning, friendly and knowledgeable people at Exhibition Stadium. Randy was first among them. There weren't many of us in the ballpark on that cold September night when Jim Clancy had his no hitter taken away by a broken bat bloop. There were countless other nights in Aprils and Septembers where there may have been a hundred of us in the stands watching our team lose a hundred games. We were die-hards. Randy taught me about the history of the game, and we discussed strategy regularly, with Randy always being more gentle and diplomatic in articulating his views. I believe that watching the bad expansion team at Exhibition Stadium made the World Series wins that much more special, and that knowing we were each there to see the bad followed by the good created an extra special bond for those few of us that were there at the beginning and stuck it out. It was more than a decade after we first met that I came to know that Randy was a successful lawyer; the field of vocation I was then embarking on. He would ask me about my practice when we would see each other, and always provide sage advice. After the halcyon days of 1992 and 1993, my attendances at the ballpark were less frequent, but I would still see Randy in recent years at judicial cocktail parties and dinners. We would talk about the Jays, and he would always show an interest in my career. There was not a pre-trial conference that he presided over with one of my associates where I did not receive a message that Randy says hi. He was truly a gentle man; one of the finest qualities for being a successful judge. I will miss seeing him in his familiar spot above the on deck circle when I am at the game. I offer my deepest sympathies to Randy's family on this profound loss.

He often spoke lovingly and proudly of his family; hopefully your grief will be somewhat lightened by knowing that so many others have been touched by him. Anne Libby & Robbie Every year I would contact Randy for our annual Xmas lunch, I would usually contact him around the second or third week of November. He was already fully booked, he often only had 1 or 2 days free in December. I don't know of any one who had so many people who loved him, he had so many friends and coworkers whom it was important for him to keep in touch with.

Randy was a partner of mine at Borden & Elliot (now Borden Ladner Gervais). He was at the top of his legal specialty, had a a marvelous sense of humour, and was a delight in every way. I had a profound respect for the lawyer and liked him as a sentient human being. The Superior Court of Justice gained much by his appointment and I'm not surprised that he enjoyed every moment of his eight years on the Bench. My wife Linda, who too recalls Randy's willingness to provide instant legal advice pro bono when she required it as Executive Director of Ontario Bar Association, joins me in expressing for us the loss of a friend and to Ann and family our sincere condolences.

Dear Ann, What can one say or write? I can’t begin to imagine your and Libby’s and Rob’s loss. It’s so unfair. He and you should have enjoyed many more years together reveling in your accomplishments and those of your children and their partners. As you know, I also loved Randy. We had lunch at least once a month for the last thirty plus years, talked on the phone two or three times per week and emailed regularly. He always spoke lovingly of you and the children, was filled with pride and was always a devoted father, friend and husband to you. We have lost a dear soul much too early. The last time I saw him on July 29th , we spent an hour and a half, reminiscing, crying, laughing telling war stories, reliving some shared experiences and memories and speaking of his hopes and wishes for your children and you. He had such enthusiasm and found solace in knowing that the family would be taken care of. That was so important to him and he was proud that through insurance and pension he would be able to have your lifestyle protected. To the very end he put his family’s well being ahead of his own. In death as in life he was inspirational. He asked me what kind of table and food and drink he should set for me when we meet again. We settled for his favourite garlic cheese toast from HY’s, a bottle of Opus 1 and a great big medium rare rib steak. It will be a great pleasure to share that meal with him when the time comes. My sincere condolences , thoughts, prayers and love to you, Libby, Robbie and the family. Peter Israel

Ann, Libby, Rob, Mrs.Echlin, Please accept my profoundest condolences to all of you and the other members of your family. If you do`not recognize me I understand as it has been about 10 years since I attended a Blue Jays game. I am the one you would see greeting you in your seats with the various giveaways I had collected for Randi, also the one Randi would laugh at as he would see some popcorn hit the ground and not my mouth. Like everyone is telling all of you these days, the thing that can be said about him was his love of Family, baseball and the law. bspector"rogers.blackberry.net

We wish to offer our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to his immediate family of Ann, Libby and Rob, all of his other relatives, his many lifelong associates and large number of friends of RANDALL SCOTT ECHLIN upon his departure from the scene at far too young an age ... Randy was a very fine and fun fellow who enjoyed all aspects of life, especially his chosen area of legal endeavour, at which he was at the top of his field in Canada for over 30 years, the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club, then later on the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, located in beautiful St. Marys, Ontario, which has thrived greatly under his able leadership over these last number of years ... We first met when Randy was one of the charter members of The Jays Booster Club, the original fan club group of the Toronto Blue Jays ... Over time he was a close associate and was of great assistance to us all in many regards throughout those very early years at Exhibition Stadium ... There are, therefore, many great moments to always recall and think back upon ... Randy is most definitely a person who shall be fondly remembered by all those who knew him and met him over time ... Thanks for everything, Randy.

I knew Randy from his first day of law school (1972?) when he was assigned to a small orientation group I was in charge of. We hit it off immediately and became friends and, later, professional colleagues in the Toronto litigation bar. Our paths did not cross regularly, but I always enjoyed seeing and catching up with Randy whenever the opportunity arose. He was a great appointment to the Bench and excelled there as his intelligence, fairness and integrity had the perfect forum. I can't think of a more collegial, congenial or professional colleague and will miss him. Our condolences to the family in this great loss and our sincere thoughts and best wishes for the future.

Dear Family of the Hon. Randy Echlin, I first met Randy many years ago through what was then CBAO (Ontario Bar Association). He was known by all as a very affable employment law guru, who always had time to explain or assist with a difficult problem --- despite his busy employment law practice at a large firm. He was a CLE giant in employment law both with the annual OBA CLE program and the book he and Matt Certosimo so capably authored during his many years at BLG. I recall how pleasantly surprised he was at his appointment to the Court and remember the event honouring his appointment. He was an excellent judge in employment law, of course, but in many other areas as well. I also recall his love of Blue Jays baseball and it is therefore fitting that Jerry Howarth's condolence is the first one. I am so sorry that Randy died so young when he had so much more to give. I was honoured to have known Randy and will remember my contacts with him. My heartfelt condolences to the Echlin family.
