Obituary of Joanne Philpott
Peacefully at St. Michael's Hospital, surrounded by her family, in her 80th year. Predeceased by her loved and loving 2nd husband David Goodwin Philpott. She leaves cherished children, Diane Fitzpatrick, Douglas Strong and Willa (Laurens) Gerlings. Adoring grandmother of Robert 'Bud' Fitzpatrick, Alex and Bay Gerlings. Dear sister of Peggy (Richard) Glassco. Fond cousin of the Woodville Stoddarts, as well as the extensive Philpott clan: Peter and Margaret Philpott, stepson Stephen (Susan), and step-grandchildren Andrew, Abby and Sarah Philpott. Joanne was a devoted daughter of Dr. Warren and Dorothy Stoddart. Dr. Stoddart was the first to write about the continuous intravenous apparatus in 1928.
She was a true blue Torontonian, and loved all the culture Toronto had to offer. She grew up in Forest Hill attending the University of Toronto, and later returned to pursue her masters there. She wrote a column for the Globe and Mail in the early 60's "The Morning Coffee Club" all about bringing up a family. She returned to the Globe in the 70"s to write a national column of profiles on Canadians from all arenas who had achieved greatness. She was appointed to the governing council of the U of T in the 80's. Joanne was a lady ahead of her time as she pursued higher education and a career, to ensure good use of her keen intellect. She and David enjoyed sailing Ontario's waters, travelling around the world, Symphony and Opera, among other things. Both were voracious readers and newshounds. They both felt it important to give back to Toronto, thus Joanne volunteered with the AGO, T.E.M.C., and the Garden Club to name a few.
Joanne loved: family times in Halliburton, gardening, her morning paper with coffee, making Sunday night roast dinners for her family, travel, books and her Book Clubs. She will be lovingly remembered as a devoted mother with a keen intellect, who above all was considerate and generous to those less fortunate.
The family wishes to thank the entire team of Nurses and Physicians at St. Michael's Hospital for their compassionate care throughout her illness.
In keeping with Joanne's wishes there will be a private family service in Timothy Eaton Memorial Church. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 11.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Joanne may be made to the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario, 130 Spadina Avenue, Suite 302, Toronto M5V 2L4 or Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, 230 Saint Clair Avenue West, Toronto M4V 2P1.
