Barry was truly the best professor I had while studying architecture (at Carleton University), and I knew that I was extremely lucky to have him be our professor while studying in Rome. His passion, knowlege, insight and professionalism were - and will be - unmatched. Despite his intellectual prowess, he was a great human being with a keen sense of humour - who still managed to laugh at my jokes (I'll never understand why). Thank you, Barry. You are missed. Dear Karen, I'm so sad to hear about Barry, life is so strange, I was with him having fun and lots of talk about architecture and travels in a London restaurant only 3 weeks ago, we were having such fun it hard to imagine this won't happen again. Barry will be sorely missed by all who knew him, from those who were his friends to those he only touched briefly, like my students in London to whom he gave their final review of the academic year only a few weeks ago at The Bartlett School of Architecture in London. Please accept all my best wishes to you and your family and very much to Sulasa whom I only met for the first time 3 weeks ago. With Love Stewart

To Barry's wife and family, It was with utter disbelief and profound sadness that I read of Barry's passing away in today's Globe and Mail. I first met Barry at U of W when we were in second year architecture together and had only recently been in touch with him again. I was lucky enough to meet Sa, who Barry spoke of so sweetly, and to be invited to their home for some wonderful dinners and parties. Barry had an infectious cheerfulness about him along with a great delight in and curiousity about life which no doubt will be missed tremendously. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time and I regret that I am unable to attend his service this afternoon as I am out in Victoria, BC visiting with my parents. Sarah Pearce

I remember Barry fondly as the man who first introduced me to the glory of the Greeks, the Roman Empire, and the Renaissance. His enthusiasm and love of his subject were an inspiration, and have kindled a lifelong interest in history, particularly art and architectural history. I also found him to be a kind and thoughtful man, and was saddened by news of his passing. My condolences to his family and friends.

I knew Barry only briefly while we were students at Waterloo. (Although he was in the year ahead, we were teaching assistants together in Ico.) He always impresed me as kind and gentle man and an intelligent architect. His sudden death is a loss felt by many. My thoughts and condolences are with the many people he cared for. The news of Barry's death has ignited an incredible coming together of his students all over Canada and the States. He meant very much to a large number of people who you may never have known to exist. I was a student of Barry's at Carleton and would like to be at the funeral - but have a small family and live in Calgary. I know from sitting at a restaurant with Barry in Paestum, Italy that he spent some time in the mountains of Alberta working at one of the large hotels (jokingly as a Bell boy). I will be thinking of Barry and send my sincerest condolences as you go though these difficult times. All the best, Dory

The Doty family is deeply saddened by the news of Barry's passing. Although I haven't seen Barry in almost 30 years, he and the entire Bell family were an important part of my teen years. My brother Rob and I have nothing but fond memories of those years and remember Barry as positive, bright and great fun to be with. Please accept our condolences.

Dear Karen & family, My deepest sympathies. I'm so sad for you. Barry was an awesome big brother -- kind, level-headed, generous, supportive, very tolerant of little sisters and their friends. What a beautiful photo. That smile takes me back 30 years when he would talk to us and help us sort out our teenage angst. Please know you are all in my prayers. Love Ruth

Both of us have fond memories of him as History & Studio professor and Elise was in Spain with him for DSA 1996. While we never could quite connect all that we should from Homer to physical structures, we enjoyed 'the Odyssey' he took us on (pun intended). We know work heavily in traditional architecture in Dominica. DEEPEST CONDOLENCES to family & friends.

It was a great shock to learn of Barry's death in the Ottawa Citizen this morning. We immediately recalled the pleasure we had and his enthusiasm looking at slides of his first trip to Italy. I alsolaughed remembering the small contract I got for him when he was a student, to prepare drawings for a booklet of instructions on how to build an outhouse. He certainly travelled a long way, both physically and intellectually. A unique individual has been lost. Our condolences to the whole family. Sincerely your old neighbours Doreen and Dieter Riedel and family.
