Obituary of John Douglas Cunningham
JOHN DOUGLAS CUNNINGHAM
1923 - 2007
The death of Mr. John D. Cunningham occurred peacefully on Sunday morning April 15, 2007 at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto. John was the beloved husband of Gladys �Gladie� (Harrington) Cunningham. Born in Saint John, N.B. on June 20, 1923, he was the son of the late Anne Y. (MacDonald) Cunningham and Charles A. Cunningham (former Fire Chief of Saint John, N.B). In addition to his wife Gladie, he was the much-loved father of Susan J. (Cunningham) and her husband Gord McDonald of Uxbridge, Ont., and J. David Cunningham and his wife Dianne (Vincent) of Saint John, N.B. He is also survived by his grandchildren Shane McDonald, Heidi and Geoff Cunningham, and fondly remembered by several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his two sisters: Ann Black and Blanche Rundle.
He joined the R.C.A.F. in 1942 and had 4 years of service as a tail gunner of a Liberator aircraft in the U.K., India and the Far East. Upon his return from service, he rejoined the N.B. Telephone Company and was with the company until 1966 when he moved to Bell Canada in Montreal, and later to Toronto. Mr. Cunningham was a loyal member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Saint John for over 60 years, and a long time member of the Masonic Lodge # 22.
