James Crang

Obituary of James Carscallen Crang

JAMES CARSCALLEN CRANG June 20, 1924 - January 25, 2007 Jim passed away peacefully with his family by his side. Jim was a talented athlete and visionary architect who with his late partner George Boake founded Crang & Boake, the firm behind Toronto landmarks such as the Holt Renfrew Centre and the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, many of Ontario's major hospitals and skyscapers and shopping malls from Asia to the Middle East. As a young man, Jim worked as a lifeguard at his father's Oakwood swimming pool near St. Clair Ave. Many of his life's passions centered on water - as a top player on the University of Toronto water polo team between 1947 and 1950 and later as a keen sailor who claimed trophies in regattas all over North America with his beloved BIBIS . Like his father, a World War One Ace and pilot of the Globe and Mail's first flying newsroom, Jim was equally at home in the air. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War and remained a respected pilot into his 60's. He was a long and active member of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, where he met Shirley, his wife of 46 years. He also leaves daughter Lesley (Rino) Rocco of Newmarket and son Dana (Sarah) Crang of Stockholm, along with grandchildren Sebastian, Cassidy, Eliza and Sadie Rocco and Charlotte and Caroline Crang. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at Christ Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge St. on Wednesday, January 31st at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
