Dr. Michael G Blackmore posted a condolence

I knew, just knew, when entered The Wellesley Hospital in 1992 for my fellowship, that HERE WAS WHERE I WAS GOING TO LEARN THE MOST.
Every aspect of RHEUMATOLOGY was there and ABOVE ALL, Dr. Smythe was there to teach me the "HUMAN CONDITION".......no pills......"commonplace sit ups"......no IV medications........"just go to sleep PROPERLY".
Through it all, I became a better rheumatologist, willing and able to deal with the common afflictions that would become the "backbone" of my practice.
Thank you Dr. Smythe, you are with me and my patients, everyday.

The entire Smythe Family is in my thoughts and prayers; as everyone
in the entire family left me with wonderful life memories.....I often think of Dr Smythe pulling up in the Mercedes convertible and Richard Conn Anne and I running to greet him after his trip from the Hospital to the cottage!
Or the memories of Bernice "winning" at Orchard Lake Golf Course, as she had her name "many times" inscribed for her many wins in Tournaments.....I also remember the fun times sailing and boating of which Richard did such a great job commandeering......no matter what the vessil......Anne and Conn were quite young then....but what a positive family spirit they all showed even then.......Thank you all for being there during my Formative Years and I am so thankful for knowing Dr. Hugh and Bernice and the family! Thanks for the Memories!! Rick Wilson Arizona

It is with sadness that I learn about Dr. Smythe's passing. My condolences to the Smythe family and Anne in particular. As a patient, Dr. Smythe gave me hope and genuinely cared in finding the right balance of medications to bring me some relief from the pain of RH when all others had given up. Thank you Anne for getting me that first appointment and for the care that your dad provided. I will forever be grateful.

I am late with these thoughts, for it takes time for news to reach me. Death is always saddening, but in Hugh we have rich and wonderful memories. When I think of Hugh, I think of his thoughtful wisdom. His fellows learned rheumatology from him, but as a basic scientist in the Rheumatic Diseaase Unit (and as a patient) I was treated to other pearls -- which I pass on to my children and students, and they are impressed. Hugh Smythe: it was a life well spent! It was a great privilege to know and work with him.

It is with a tear in my eye and sadness in my heart. That I read of the passing of Dr Smythe. In 1977 at the age of 16 yrs until his retirement. Dr Smythe was my doctor. A lifelong sufferer of JRA Dr Smythe was the voice of comfort not just to myself, but my mother as well. Through his incite and care. I was able to seek a career in medical X-ray Technology. Dr Smythe I feel was ahead of his time encouraging patients like myself to be pro-active in their own care. As such I have lead a fairly handy-capable life. His legacy will endure, not just with the many many patients he treated. But the many rheumatologists he mentored. God has a special place for healers such as Dr Smythe. May he richly Bless the Smythe family and comfort his wife at this time of loss. The Wellesly family has lost a treasure. Sincerely: John A. Curran

What a loss for us all - his immediate family and his extended Rheumatology family. It was Hugh's unwavering commitment to his patients and to his faculty colleagues which will be remembered by so many. I was fortunate to have been on who personally benefitted tremendously from Hugh’s support, encouragement, and friendship at many critical points in my career. And for that I am deeply grateful. He will be greatly missed by us all.

Dr. Hugh Smythe is one of the last old-guard members left from the great Maple Leafs owner of yesteryear, Conn Smythe. Hugh was Conn's son and I am impressed that he was the Leafs' team doctor from 1949-69, a period of time when my beloved Leafs won a bunch of Stanley Cups.
My sympathies to the Smythe family.

I was very saddened by news of Hugh's death. As I had not kept inclose touch with him, I was unaware that he was sick.I have known Hugh for more than 50 yars. Yet in some ways he never seemed to get older. He loved paradox, he had a gift for seeing things differently from others, and therefore getting unique insights. He had a healthy irreverence for authority especially when accompanied by pomposity. We disagreed on a number of occasions, but never with rancour. It has been said that everyone is expendable, but some people are irreplaeable. Those of us who knew Hugh feel a great loss. The world has suddenly become a much grayer place. My hearfelt sympathies to Bernice and all of Hugh's family.

I stood in a crowded elevator in the hospital. I overheard a woman say, "I just love that Hugh Smythe. He always makes me laugh. He said he wanted to see me again in a week's time. I told him I didn't like coming down here in the middle of winter. He said, 'Then why did you get sick in the winter then?'"
I don't remember a single encounter with him when he did not manage to bring a smile to my face, no matter what the circumstance. I could speak to him with my eyes and always felt understood. Then he would guide me onward, as a compass points true north. He will be greatly missed.

Like Jerry Tenenbaum, I have such good memories of "Professor Smythe" from my training in Rheumatology in the 1980's. He was a true inspiration and mentor. He was such an original thinker and had such a passion for his profession. Yet, it was always clear that there was a priority of his cherished family above and beyond his profession. He was so innovative and really thought outside the box more than any other colleague I have encountered. We still apply what he described in fibrositis/ fibromyalgia. He made me rethink my approach osteoarthritis as he discussed impact loading forces across the finger joints. Remember the pillow that he was so excited about, inspired by ancient headrests he collected from his travels? We still all apply the Hugh Smythe 10 cm measurements of the spine. His inventions are still applied and leave a wonderful legacy for Rheumatologists all over the world. Dr. Smythe always had a smile and a quick wit! He was ahead of the rest of us, but was very tolerant of those of us who had trouble keeping up with him. I recall my first meeting with him. I was presenting a patient to him during my Rheumatology fellowship. The patient had undergone a total hip replacement for osteoarthritis of the hip. I naively said that the patient had "presented with hip pain". At that juncture, Dr. Bmythe retorted, "Dr. Shuckett, you don't know your acetabulum (part of the hip joint) from a hole in the ground"!. He was teaching me to never assume where the pain was coming from. I love telling that story to the 250 UBC medical students when I lecture them annually on history taking. He has left a legacy in his family but has had a lasting imprint on so many of us who were privileged to have trained with him. My condolenses to the family; Bernice i remember your elegance and generosity in having the Rheumatology fellows over to your cottage each year. Rhonda Shuckett

I think of Rodin's "The Thinker" when I remember the impact of this great man on my formative times. He was central and tangential all at the same time. He meant the world to me, taking a continuing interest in an early career. He was a true leader and teacher and challenged us all to be better and look critically at the entire picture. I honour his memory and will miss him. I am enriched by all the memories of his profound impact.
