Obituary of Winnifred Parkes

PARKES, Winnifred Grace (Stevenson) On Friday, October 26, 2007 in Sudbury in her 92nd year. Loved mother of Donalda, Toronto, David (Katherine), Burlington, and Clifford, Sudbury. Dear sister of Shirley Peters and Ronald (Theresa) Stevenson, Kingston and proud grandmother of Michael, Burlington and Christopher (Judith), Thunder Bay. Predeceased in 1978 by her husband Donald and in 1953 by her sister Thelma. Born on Wolfe Island in 1916, Winnifred graduated from Kingston General Hospital's School of Nursing in 1938. She spent the next two years assisting her new husband, Dr. Parkes, in providing dental care for the Red Cross travelling by rail throughout Northern Ontario, living and working in a CPR railway dental car. She supported him in his dental practice for many years in Caledonia and later returned to full time nursing during his illness. From 1962 to 1981 Winnifred worked in Hamilton at the Henderson General and Chedoke hospitals and in private care for the Cancer society. In retirement she enjoyed many travels in Canada and abroad. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East), from 6-9 p.m. on Monday, October 29. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, October 30 in the chapel with a reception to follow. A private interment will be held at Prospect Cemetery, Toronto. Memorial donations to the Arthritis Society for Metropolitan Toronto, 393 University Avenue, Suite #1700, Toronto, Ontario M5G 1E6 would be appreciated by the family.
