TURNER, Dr. Robert Edward (Ed)
Died quietly in his sleep at Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto on July 27th, 2006, in his 81st year. Beloved husband of Gene Anne (Jan), nee Stewart, for 54 years. Loved father of Margaret and her husband Doug Fleming (Aurora), John and his wife Julia (Manitoulin Island), Robert and his wife Sylvie (Ottawa), Richard and his wife Anne (Toronto), and dearly missed by his grandchildren Andrew, Cameron, Graeme, Ian, Beth, Emilie, Eric, and William. He was born in Hamilton, Ontario on June 8, 1926. He obtained an Honours B.A. from McMaster University in 1948 and went on to complete a degree in Medicine at the University of Toronto in 1952. After post-graduate studies in psychiatry at the University of Bristol, he received a Diploma in Psychiatry at the University of Toronto in 1957. A pioneer of forensic psychiatry, Ed had a long and illustrious career including such positions as Director of the Forensic Clinic of the Toronto Psychiatric Hospital, Medical Director of the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, Psychiatrist-in-Charge and Director of the Metropolitan Toronto Forensic Service (METFORS) and Professor Emeritus of Forensic Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. His love of family, dedication to his career and devotion to his church were the main sources of his strength and joy. In his leisure time he enjoyed a wide variety of classical music, singing in the St. James Choral Society, traveling throughout the United Kingdom, and reading and painting at the family cottage on Georgian Bay. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East), from
2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday, July 31, 2006. Funeral service and reception will be held Tuesday, August 1 at 10:30 a.m. in ST. JAMES CATHEDRAL, Toronto, followed by the burial for family and close friends.
