Peacefully, after a brief illness, on April 13, 2006 at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre at the age of 88. Survived by his four sons, David (Isabel), Douglas, Donn (Jean) and Dale. Predeceased by his parents, Ralph Bartlett and Rose Ellen, his stepmother Merle and his brother Douglas.
Ralph was born on January 14, 1918 in Jordan Station, Ontario. He grew up in Toronto and attended North Toronto Collegiate Institute. In 1934 he commenced employment with the Ontario Government and in 1935 he joined the Department of Mines, to which he returned after service in the Army. He served as Mining Recorder for Eastern Ontario and in 1954 was appointed Director of the Mining Lands Branch. In 1970, Ralph was appointed Director of the newly formed Northern Affairs Branch of the Department of Mines and Northern Affairs, and he recruited and organized the Branch across Northern Ontario and directed its activities until he retired in November 1977.
Ralph volunteered for the Irish Regiment of Canada at the outbreak of the war in 1939, transferring to the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps in 1942, and proceeded overseas in April 1942, serving in two Canadian Army Field Workshops in England, Italy and Northwest Europe. After the war, he served in the Militia in Toronto until 1958, when he retired as second-in-command of 4 Ordnance Battalion. Ralph continued to serve the Reserve Force in an honourary capacity with 25 (Toronto) Service Battalion. He was also an officer of the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps Association and the Canadian Logistics Association and was an active member of the EME Association. He was the chairman of the working group, which led to the publication of the history of the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps in 1984. Ralph was a member of the Fort York Branch 165, Royal Canadian Legion.
The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East), for a service in the chapel on Friday, May 12th at 11 o�clock.
