Marion Johnston

Obituary of Marion Jane Johnston

Dr. Marion Jane Johnston (ne Lawson) March 26, 1910 - March 30, 2006 After a valiant battle, Marion has moved on to a better life. She was the dearly loved mother of Anne Wallace and mother-in-law to Jack, who Marion thought, could do anything! Doting grandmother of Paul (Sheila) Wallace, Liz Wallace Patterson (John), John (Anne-Marie) Wallace and David Wallace. Thrilled great-grandmother to Kayla, Nathan and Alyana Wallace, Sarah and Claire Wallace and Mason (born on Marions Birthday) and Quinn Patterson. Aunt to Peter Beck and Delwin McLennan, who were a great source of pride and joy to Marion. Marion is predeceased by her loving husband William Wallace Johnston, her daughter Marguerite, her parents, three sisters, a baby brother and nephews Gordon McLennan and Paul Beck. Marion and her sisters all attended Oakwood Collegiate Institute and proceeded to the University of Toronto, at a time when only a few women obtained higher education. There, Marion studied Biochemistry and obtained her Ph.D. It was in the Biochemistry Department that she met another fellow Ph.D., William Wallace Johnston, whom later she married. As her husband went to Halifax, his young bride followed and there they were instrumental in the development of Cod Liver Oil. They moved to Montreal and then to Toronto, where their careers changed to teaching. Marion did supply teaching and was sought after by many school boards in the west end of Toronto, until she stopped to care for her ailing husband. Marion natured and nurtured all who came in contact with her. She encouraged all to be the best they could. Thank you. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East), on Monday, April 3rd from 12-1 p.m. followed by a service in the chapel at 1 oclock. Interment York Cemetery. In memory of Marion, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario, 1920 Yonge Street, 4th Floor, Toronto, Ontario M4S 3E2, would be appreciated.
