Obituary of Arthur Hammond Mingay

MINGAY, Arthur Hammond Peacefully, surrounded by his children, on January 9, 2006 at the age of 86. Husband of the late Florence Greenhill Carmichael. Beloved father of Cameron (Christina Budweth), Mary Jane and Margo (David Winsor). Dear grandfather of Lisa, Elizabeth, Alexandra, Eden, Bridgette, Charlotte and Tegan. Fondly remembered by his sisters Marion McKenzie (Jim), Margaret Hamilton (Bud - deceased), Catherine Fox (Arnold). Predeceased by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Don (Mary), James and Ross (Betty). Fondly remembered by his brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jim Carmichael (Carol) and Dolly Ruston and a large extended family. Arthur was a well-respected and charismatic businessman and philanthropist, but even more importantly, he touched everyone he met with his genuine interest in people. He was a true gentleman, in every sense of the word, and his kindness and generosity knew no bounds. Arthur spent his entire working career at the Canada Trust, except for the four years in which he served overseas during the Second World War. He started at the bottom and finished at the top. Upon his retirement, the Canada Trust established a chair at the School of Business Administration at the University of Western Ontario, named: The J. Allyn Taylor and Arthur H. Mingay Chair in Business Administration. In the 27 years that these gentlemen held the positions of president or chairman, the Canada Trust grew one hundredfold and achieved recognition as one of Canada's premier financial institutions. At different times during his business career, Arthur sat on the boards of directors of Algoma Steel, Inglis, Loblaws, Mutualife, Royal Insurance and Sears. His charitable contributions are too numerous to list, but include fundraising endeavours and board participation with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, The United Way, Thompson Hall and Sunnybrook Hospital. Arthur also found time for extensive community involvement through the church, the Kiwanis Club and Rosedale Golf Club, where he served as President. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East) from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. on January 12, 2006. The funeral service will take place in LEASIDE UNITED CHURCH, 822 Millwood Road, Toronto, on January 13, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. There will be a private interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery following the service. Family and friends are welcome to share remembrances at a reception at Rosedale Golf Club from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. In Arthur's memory, donations may be made to the Leaside United Church, Honduran Fund, 822 Millwood Road, Toronto M4G 1W4.
