Obituary of Ruth Muggeridge

Ruth Adelaide Muggeridge 1919 - 2012 Ruth Adelaide Muggeridge at the age of 93, passed peacefully into rest, with her family by her bedside, at Port Perry Hospital Saturday evening, September 15th, 2012, from complications of surgeries for a broken hip. Ruth is mourned and lovingly remembered by her son Alan, daughter-in-law Donna Muggeridge, daughter Elaine, and son-in-law Paul Hillier. Ruth was predeceased by her loving husband Gordon Edward Muggeridge, her brother Jack Prier and his wife Audrey Prier, her sisters Vivian Prier, and Phyllis Sanderson and her husband Douglas Sanderson. 'Mrs. M' or 'Auntie Ruth' as she was known to many, was loved, admired and will be missed by her many generations of nieces and nephews across Canada who were so special to her. Most of all she was a kind and caring friend to all she met, a good neighbour, and active member of her community in Toronto, and later Port Perry, Ontario. Ruth loved her Don Mills home, her neighbours of many years, and her garden pleased her greatly in her senior years. In the past few years, after leaving Don Mills, Ruth became an active resident of Port Perry Villa, residing in her own apartment, where she made many new friends. Born in 1919 on a farm in Tillsonburg, Ontario, she attended public school in nearby St. Thomas and later graduated from high school in Toronto. Ruth graduated from Toronto General Hospital's School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse and enlisted in the Canadian Army as a nurse, soon to be posted overseas. Ruth was proud to have served as a decorated officer and 'Nursing Sister' in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in England, Belgium and Holland. She served until the end of the war, resigning her commission to marry Gordon in 1948. Gordon was also a veteran and decorated officer in WWII, serving at Juno Beach on D-Day and later in the Korean conflict with the RCAMC. As a civilian, Ruth worked many years as the company nurse at Columbia Records in Don Mills while raising her young family. Later in life, Ruth received first the Queen's Gold and, more recently, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for her years dedicated to advocating for Canadian war veterans through the Nursing Sisters Association of Canada. Ruth Muggeridge was an active, remarkable, caring individual. She was greatly loved, will be deeply missed and will always be remembered. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES CHAPEL LIMITED, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service in the chapel at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 20th. If desired, and in lieu of flowers, a donation to the Salvation Army would be appreciated. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
