Well Charlie, what do you think about that? Our family got to know DJ very well in his latter years. He was like a second Grampa to my daughter Katie whom he loved and a great friend to Susan and I. We loved our dinners at Richlee, drinking Merlot and critiquing the after dinner port. He was, as I knew him, a man who loved better things but was deeply appreciative of everything he had and his good fortune in life. He and I would often begin our dinners at York Downs reidentifying the greater questions and doing our best to answer them once again. His answers were usually pretty good. I loved that dry cynical sense of humour and his solid conservative values. Always looking for the opportunity to laugh and make others laugh...every so often a little jig in his step for no reason in particular. My son Christian and I conned him into having a beer with us one night at Hooter's in Daytona Beach. After a few awkward moments, and having decided that none of his friends would ever be there to see him, we settled in and made a night of it. Too many stories..all good. He was a wonderful man. We loved him dearly and have missed him in our lives.

The gold watch, the cigars, the cardigans, his generosity as a host and relative, are the first things that come to mind when I think of my Uncle Don, but perhaps one of his most unique qualities was his ability to walk through all of lifes extremes of joy and tagedy without changing his facial expression. His poker face was well tested over the years but his countenance was ever the same,-- slightly sad, but always calm, always patient. A face-- and a man--,one could depend on. Thankyou so much, Ian and Johanna, for loving him and caring for him through all the challenges. May your memories of him be as warm and delightful as my own are to me. I love you very much. DJ was my uncle Don, and was Uncle Don to quite a crew of us. When we were young he was remarkable to me for his general cheerfulness and his even temper even as he was surrounded by the chaos of visiting relatives. As we got older he confounded me with his rhetorical questions about the state of the world, and delighted me by offering cigars and cognac and dismissive comments about my political leanings. He and my Aunt Isabelle were generous. I lived in their house until I found my own place when I moved to the city for my first job. Don helped my brother when he was working, writing and going to school, and I know if Fraser were here he would write something eloquent, funny and moving. Ian and Johanna, I know you will miss your DJ and I think you both did a great job of surrounding him with loyalty, love and caring. Doug and I will remember him always and we offer you our support and our love. Jo
