I knew Jim for a while when we were students at Dalhousie University durng the fall of 1978. We were both transplanted Newfoundlanders and MUN grads. I was at the Dal grad school of business and met Jim at the Grad House, most likely. While alot of the details have faded over the years, Jim made a lasting impression on me; one which I have long remembered although we did not meet again.Often during the years since then, I wondered what became of Jim. I kept expecting to see that he had written a book but, if he did, I never saw any news. Now ,sadly, he has passed away so I will will never have the opportunity to phone Jim out of the blue and ask him if he remembers our time at Dal. I see that Jim also made a lasting impression on all those he met during his life. He had an interesting and full life according to accounts; albeit one cut short from reaching its full potential. Although Jim and I went our separate ways, I always looked forward to someday renewing old acquaintances. There would have been a lot of catching up to do but I know Jim would have been up to the task and supplied with lots of yarns to spin away the years. Sadly, that thread has now been cut short. Jim's life was blessed by the presence and support of family and many friends. I extend my condolences to those who have lost a friend and compagnion. May his memory always be cherished in your hearts.

Sincerest sympathy to Mary, Reg, Ted and Linda, from Elizabeth, Keelin and Frank O'Leary. Although we knew Jim had been struggling with his illness for quite some time, we had no idea he was so close to the end. It came as a shock, and one we will not get over soon. Having just 2 weeks ago suffered the loss of our husband/father, we have a special empathy for what you are feeling now ... there is an air of unreality about it all, even though, rationally, we all knew it was coming. We now have two holes in our hearts, in the same month, because Jim was almost as much a part of our family as of yours. Better to dwell on the good times. We knew each other since our very beginnings, when our parents put Ted, Jim and I in a common playpen ... to protect the neighbourhood from us, not vice-versa! If only all Jim's friends of later years knew what Ted and I know about his early years, when we all got into trouble together. Truth be told, Jim was the instigator of all the hijinks, and Ted and I (the less-bright duo of the trio) took the rap ... Jim sitting back on the sidelines, grinning, saying "Who, me? I wasn't involved ... it was them two!" (I recall particularly the "egging" of the O'Dea household!) God bless you, Jim ... I'll miss you as the brother of my heart. Frank

I was so sorry to hear about Jim's passing in today's Globe. I knew Jim when I lived briefly in St. John's, and also in Halifax. He was a wonderful person and obviously died too young. I don't know if Ted will remember me but I'd like to hear from you about what happened. Sincerely, Sue Calhoun
