Whenever we saw Ruth, we were warmed by her smile, charmed by her gentle nature and engaged with her great intellect. She had a wonderfully positive outlook on life, regardless of any adversity. A true lady and an inspiration for us all. Our deepest sympathies to Julia and all the Sweeney family.

Aunt Ruth was my hero. From the time I was a child, I wanted to be just like her. She was smart, pretty, and, I thought, always happy. Whenever she saw me, her whole face smiled and her eyes sparkled. She made me feel loved and special. When tragedy struck and her sister Elsie, our mother, died at the age of 41, she hugged us and cried with us. And for the rest of her life, her eyes filled with tears when she spoke of her. I knew that she was heartbroken, too, and yet I watched as her spirit and her love of life would not let her stay in that sad, dark place of grief. The joy inside her won out and I saw the twinkle come back into her eyes and her beautiful smile return. I followed her, as I so often did, and she led me out of that dark place too. She showed me that it was okay to laugh and to love life again. Thank you Aunt Ruth for your guidance, your friendship, and your love. I will love you always, Lynn

My first year at Saltfleet as a grade 9 student was 1949. The only lesson I clearly remember in all my high school days was the first French class with Miss Newey. All in french we were individually encouraged to recite the objects in the class which she pointed out and named. It was a lesson unlike any we had experienced before. She was an outstanding teacher.

My condolences to Ron and the rest Ruth's family. I have many vivid memories of Boots, though I have forgotten (what once I knew) exactly how she came by her nick-name. I was among a group of young men (or boys) who regularly visited her in a flat (I think) on Jane St. I remember her mother (who was very proud of being a "newfie"), her brother (Jack?), and her two elder sisters, the younger of whom was called Barbara (nicknamed "Boon")and the elder who was married to a gaunt chap who smoked (and drank and gambled?) heavily, and was duly frowned upon. I lived on Willard Ave. and went to King George school (long since torn down). Boots, however, went to Humbercrest School (still proudly standing) on St. Mark's road. For our first year of High School we both went to Runnymede Collegiate, though (since I was a bout a year older) had no classes in common. In about a year, She moved to Humberside Collegiate, while I stayed on at Runnymede. Humberside is near High Park. Somewhere I have a photo of her sitting fetchingly in s smallish pine tree there. We were then brought closer at the University of Toronto, though I went to University College and she to Victoria College. I remember seeing (in the Hart House Theatre) her starring performance in Thorton Wilder's The Skin of out Teeth, dazzling in net-mesh stockings. After we both graduated, I think I saw her only once - at a Runnymede Collegiate re-union. She confessed then that she regretted the somewhat puritanical view of life the he got from her mother. I am glad to have learned from the notice in the Globe of the rich and varied life she had in the years after I knew her. I can still recognize her in the photo above: something in the shape and set of the mouth and chin and the haunting beauty of her eyes. With me til I die, and maybe even after.

I was saddened and surprised to hear of the passing of Auntie Ruth. She was so vibrant and full of love and life when I last saw her. I am so glad I was able to see her, Julia and Gary at Dad's funeral, after so many years living away. It brought back lots of memories. I vividly remember visiting the house in Port Credit when I was young - it was so exotic to me.I have a perpetual image in my mind of Auntie Ruth smiling in her kitchen .I also recently saw beautiful pictures of Ron at his granddaughter's wedding and of Mom and Uncle Ron when she visited him.
I know you will all miss her dearly, and hope that the happy memories will eventually overcome the sadness.
