Obituary of Elizabeth Peacocke

PEACOCKE, Brigadier Elizabeth, (Order of the Founder),(Order of Canada) - A lifetime of service as a Salvation Army officer. Peacefully on February 26, 2005, at her home in her 85th year. Known as Auntie Betty by all, she was the loving aunt of Paul (Debbie), Liz (Graham), Lee (Paul), David (Tammy), Doug (Karen), Donna and Marilyn. Elizabeth will also be sadly missed by her sister-in-law, Helen. She was loved by many great-nieces and nephews and one great-great-niece. Brigadier Elizabeth Peacocke, commissioned in 1943, holds the distinction of being the first of five Salvation Army officers to receive the Order of Canada. This was presented to her by then Governor General Roland Michener on April 11, 1973. Her other honours include: Centennial Medal (1967) in appreciation for exemplary service to Canada; Woman of the Year Award (1988) presented by the Hamilton (Ontario)Status of Women Committee in the community service category, and Celebrate Canadian Citizenship and Immigration Certificate (2000) presented by the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Government of Canada. Recognition was not important to Auntie Betty, her greatest satisfaction came from service to her Lord and Saviour and to others as a Salvation Army officer. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East), from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, February 28 and from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1. A funeral service will be held at the North Toronto Citadel, 7 Eglinton Avenue East on Wednesday, March 2nd at 11:00 a.m. Interment Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Citadel.
