I was so shocked and saddened to learn of Marion's passing when I visited Penrose this week. I can't remember when I first met Marion, but it must be at least 50 years ago when I was at Penrose with my parents or grandparents. I have been a regular for many years, drawn as much by the family as the "Best Fish&Chips " in Toronto. Marion was always there with a ready smile and warm voice to greet me, a story when she had a moment and always a cheerful comment or two. I feel like I've lost a life-long friend and am still in shock from when when Katie responded to my query about her. I did not even know she had been ill and wish I could have been of some comfort to her. I know she was always there for her customer/friends. To all of her family, and especially to Dave and Katie who worked with her daily, you are in our thoughts and prayers. I knoow there are many who share your grief. Marion was a special person who will never be forgotten by anyone who knew her. I miss her and cannot believe she is gone. God Bless you All and thank God for the privledge of knowing Marion Johnston and sharing her with us.

My heartfelt prayers and condolences are offered to Marion's family and friends. After shopping at Penrose for many years, it was always a joy to see Marion and hear her delicate voice. Not something one hears often in these rushed times. Marion held an iconic presence in Toronto. I shall never forget her. Peace.

Gail, I was so saddened to hear of your mothers passing. She truly was a wonderful lady, and a very special mother to you. Whenever I went into the store, she would always ask about Glenn and was particularly interested in news about Emma. She had such a gentle way about her. She lives on in you, and I know that you have had some memorable trips and adventures with her. You were blessed to have her for so long. My thoughts are with you and your family at this time. Regards Jane Smith

Many of my best childhood memories involve your Mum, family and their home - my first camping trip, dancing in the basement, many happy dinners and later working in the store. Your Mum was always kind and generous with a quiet sense of humour. She is an inspiration to all mothers. She will be greatly missed at get-togethers at Gail's and Christmas Eve at our place. My deepest condolences to you all.

I am so saddened over Mrs. Johnston's passing, and I send my deepest condolences to her wonderful family. I have known Mrs. Johnston since I was a child growing up in the 1970s just two blocks from her and her husband's renowned fish and chips shop (the best in Toronto!), and I continue to go to their restaurant. Mrs. Johnston embodied much grace, gentleness, character and warmth and she always took a sincere interest and pleasure in you. I always admired her great dedication to her customers, and her remarkable work ethic, as she and Mr. Johnston built Penrose Fish & Chips into a city-wide institution. Her death truly marks the end of an era and I feel that Mount Pleasant Road will never be the same again. God bless you Mrs. Johnston.

Marion was a remarkable person; strong yet gentle, with a sharp mind and a mischievous humour. For almost 40 years she made us feel not like customers, but like family, . She welcomed us, made time for a chat, and left us smiling. We will miss her greatly.
