Obituary of Christine Elizabeth Hughes

Hughes, Christine Elizabeth (nee Sexton) Passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 2, 2006 in Toronto. She is survived by her husband Paul, daughters Paula Potter and Cindy Hughes and granddaughter Lindsay Potter. Born in 1932 to Bessie and Jack Sexton, she grew up in Montreal and in 1955 was married to Paul Hughes. Together they raised their two daughters. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends, who will always remember her grace and elegance, her abundant energy, her searching mind and above all her amazing spirit. Chris graduated from the Town of Mount Royal High School, earned a B.SC (physical education) from McGill in 1953 and for two years she taught in private schools in Montreal. During and after raising a family she devoted considerable time, energy and skills to her work as a volunteer for The Redpath Museum in Montreal, The National Ballet of Canada and the Toronto Garden Club. She was very active as a member of the Toronto Herb Society and was one of the founders of the Toronto Ivy Society and the Cognashene Garden Club. She very much enjoyed the time she spent at the Current Events Club, her Book Club and her Investment Club (Nine Lives) which later became a social/outing club. She was a member of the Arts and Letters Club, which was an outlet for her interest in the arts, and a member of the Badminton and Racquet Club, which was an important focus for her social activities and where she played tennis. Chris had a lifelong participation and interest in skiing and tennis, as well as a passion for summering in Georgian Bay, where she spent many hours of bliss in her wonderful gardens. In addition to her many interests and activities, she was always in close touch with her small family and her many, many friends. The family wishes to gratefully thank those dear friends, her doctor Barbara Vari and the palliative care nurses at St. Michaels Hospital for the much needed warm and generous support. A memorial service to celebrate Chris life will be held on Wednesday, February 8th at 3 oclock in LAWRENCE PARK COMMUNITY CHURCH, 2180 Bayview Avenue.
