We had the good fortune to move in next to Jean in 2005. Jean loved our kids and got such a kick out of watching their exploits from her kitchen window. I would always tease her that thankfully she could turn down her hearing aid when their noise volume was too much for most.
During the last couple of weeks prior to Jean's death, our kids genuinely enjoyed visiting with her and playing with her cat Doni. Even after a soccer game at 8:30pm they would want to head to Jean's for a visit. They didn't quite understand their need for sleep, or more importantly, Jean's need for it. Too them it didn't matter, they just wanted to see Jean. That's the beauty of children and Jean recognized that so well.
One of our favourite memories is Jean walking in our shared driveway while our youngest, Jackson, accompanied her on his tricycle. He was very proud of this important role.
We have tried to explain to our children how special Jean was and I think they understand. We certainly know and are so thankful for the time we had to get to know her. She is an inspiration to us now and in the future.
