Obituary of Byron Calovoulos

Peacefully on Thursday, May 26th, 2011 at Southlake Regional Hospital in his 90th year. Beloved husband of over 60 years to Anne (Dangas), loving and adored father of Dia, Anthony and his wife Liana, Themis Helen, and his adored godchildren Eleni and Anastasia. He will be sadly missed by his loving eight grandchildren, Lori Ann and her husband Tyler, Blake, Kristin, Gregory, Cary, Stephanie, Andrew and Michael. Byron will be missed by his many relatives and friends here in Canada, in Greece and the U.S.A. Byron came to Canada with his wife from Greece in 1950. He specialized in the medical field. He worked as Chief Lab Technician at Mount Sinai Hospital for five years and then in Medical Sales until his retirement. Byron was devoted to his religion and volunteered countless hours to his faith. He was a member of the St. George Council of Directors and he also was an adviser for the establishment of All Saints Parish. He was a Director of the Diocese of the Greek Orthodox Church in Canada for 36 years and later appointed as Vice-President of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Toronto, Canada. He was bestowed the highest honour and was appointed Archon Depoutatos of the Greek Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. He was elevated to this honour of Depoutatos by His Eminence the Archbishop Iakovos, of North and South America. This took place in New York City on March 20, 1994. For all of us that knew Byron, he was a true gentleman, kind and compassionate. Many knew him as a faithful friend, always willing to give of himself. Byron's memory will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone he touched. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue, (south of Davisville Avenue) on Sunday, May 29th between 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. (Prayer service at 7:00 p.m.). At Byron's request the funeral will be private. If desired, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Toronto Orthodox Theological Academy, 86 Overlea Boulevard, Toronto M4H 1C6.
