Dear Tom, Jane, Annabel, Ubi and David, I am saddened to hear of your Dad's passing. If I might.. I'll never forget bumping into him at the MacTier lcbo a few years ago. It was late autumn but they had some summer cooler drink on sale. The display proclaimed the drink to be "15% Real Fruit Juice!" Your Dad picked up a bottle and read aloud in his wry manner "15% Real Juice.. hmm." And then, with a subtle shift to a more skeptical tone he said "Gee.. I wonder what the other 85% of this stuff is?!" He set the bottle down with a decisiveness that seemed to indicate a desire to put as much distance between himself and that awful beverage. This is still hilarious to me. He will be missed, With my deepest sympathy, Mike Welsman

I was so very sorry to read about your dad this past weekend. He was such a great guy. A wonderful, kind, caring man. Your parents and mine were friends - B and R - and all that - but I had the pleasure of knowing him more personally as my doctor. He helped me with all 3 of my pregnancies and delivered our firstborn and our third child. Chris, our first, was born with Prader Willi Syndrome. That was a very difficult time for his dad and I. Your dad was so kind and caring with us. He spent a lot of time with us and with our baby and his compassion was key to our whole outlook at the time. He was away at your family cottage on the May 24th long weekend that our second daughter was born. I phoned him at the cottage to tell him of her arrival and asked him if we could name her after him. I think he was quite pleased. He told me that he had always hoped someone might do that! Ryley Anne Beddoe is now 29 - doing her PHD at Queen's - and was, in fact, the one who called me to tell me about your dad. A very special man. I felt so lucky to have him as my doctor and I know that all of his patients must have felt like me. I hope that now, in the communion of family and friends you are able to enjoy wonderful memories of him. I always felt like he was linked to my family, too. He played such an integral part in it. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I extend to you all my deep sympathy. Affectionately, Jan

I am sorry to learn that Tom has left us. I knew Tom when his family moved into the former Walker house on Latchford Street in Haileybury in the 1930s. It was right behind our house. We all participated in neighbourhood activities. I think Pat will remember those times. The last time that I saw Tom was after they moved to Toronto. I visited once on a Sunday. An anecdote that might amuse. The wife of a friend sat beside Tom on a flight to Europe and spent time talking to him. She commented on his accent, and said that she only knew one other person with that same accent; Bob Cumming who grew up in Haileybury. Tom said that he had lived there and knew me. Tom had left Haileybury, but it never left him. My condolences to Pat and the rest of the family.
