Dear Mathews Family, Ellen was a most wonderful member of my creativity class at Toronto School of Art. As gentle and perceptive and twinkly a soul as one could ever hope to meet. I want to send you some of Ellen's words that she wrote to me when my father died in January this year. In February Ellen wrote " I recall when my father died, wanting to burst out into the street and exclaim to the world 'the most momentous thing'. You must be so proud and sad. Relief or not, nothing prepares us for the finite separation. I wish you time and peace for the infinite." May her words bring comfort to you all. Megan Williams Faculty, Toronto School of Art

Dear Ian and Katie: Your mother was a very special person. Although we did not see each other often whenever we did, we would pick up from where we left off the last time. She had such kindness and empathy and I consider myself fortunate to have been a friend. I always left your mom feeling soothed and calm. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely Sally

Ellen was always a bright light in my life. I knew, whenever we talked or walked or ate together, my life would be enriched and oh so cheery. How I loved our walks on the beach, along Queen Street poking in the shops and lunching or dining in one of the many lovely restaurants there en parlant francais. She was so inspiring with her change of pace and passionate pursuit of the art world. I will miss my buddy, but I know that all I have to do is to think of her and my day will brighten again.

I just wanted to extend my sincere condolences to Ellen's family. Katie and Ian, I only met your Mom a few short years ago when we had the good fortune of sharing a lovely apartment in Avignon through our good friend Michaela. We got to know each other by exploring our wondeful surroundings during trips to the market, stopping for our morning coffee and croissant at the local cafe, chatting up local firemen and merchants and of course painting and enjoying the local wines. Your Mom had this gentle curiosity and zest for learning and I think her painting reflected this. Know that her spirit will live on within you and when you need her, you will continue to feel her presence.

I met Ellen when I was brought onboard to help with her ailing mother in the mid 1990s. I have so many amusing and touching memories of our time with Barbara and some lovely visits afterwards. Such a funny, smart, involved woman. We'd lost touch after our last move so I had no idea she was ill. My deepest sympathy to Jim, Hugh and John and to her beloved Ian and Katie. My sincerest condolences to Ellen's family and all those close to her. I met Ellen through our time spent at Central Tech Adult Art program. It was during these early days of acquaintance that I recognized her gentle inquiring mind and grew to appreciate her critical support that was not given out lightly. Our acquaintanceship developed into a friendship. Ellen gave me further support as I progressed through my degree program at OCAD. With some mutual friends (Giselle and Sheila) we met on my graduation where, despite her battle then with the cancer, she was the life of the party. We had a wonderful day. I think her spirit might have given me a little tap on the shoulder, as for no rational reason her image, and that happy last meeting, flashed in my mind just yesterday. I know she will be sorely missed by many. Goodbye Ellen.

I've always admired Ellen. She took the steps to fulfill her dreams. I found her to be a gentle soul with a quiet strength and fortitude. Ellen was kind, intelligent and non judgemental. We knew each other for 35 years. We did not spend a lot of time together as life always takes us on our own path. However the time we did spend was enjoyable. Good bye my friend....see you in the next life... Katie and Ian my heart is with you. She lives on in our memories.

From summer camp in Algonquin Park, sharing a room at Jasper Park Lodge, college, marriage, children, careers, retirement, visits to Nova Scotia and lots of jazz, we shared so many memories. Her last e-mail to me was headed "dories and memories" and that is how I will always think of Ellen. To Michael she was a keen and supportive friend. We both loved her joie de vivre. Ellen was incredibly proud of and close to her children, Ian and Katie, her wonderful family and her many friends. We all wish we could have had her in our lives for so much longer. She will be missed always. With love and condolences from Cara and Michael (Peterman) Plymouth, Mass. April 5, 2011
