Obituary of Stephen Brown

STEPHEN CHRISTOPHER RUSSELL BROWN On Monday, March 28th, 2011, unexpectedly, after a short illness. Beloved husband of the late Beatrice Isabel Boyd Brown, he is survived by his loving children, Christopher, Adrianne (Mel Logan), Gillian (Jonathan Kirkwood), his granddaughter, Esme Isabel Brown Kirkwood, and his older brother, Philip (Sarah). He was predeceased by his younger brother, Oliver. Son of the late Sir William Barrowclough Brown and Elizabeth Mabel Scott, he was born in London in 1927. He was educated at Malvern College and Cambridge University (Selwyn College), where he rowed extensively. In an adventurous early life, he was a teacher, semi-professional boxer, and he served with the Royal Navy. He began his career in investments as a banker, which brought him to Canada in 1953 to work for the Canadian Bank of Commerce (now CIBC). In a successful and fulfilling career, he worked for Burns Fry, Richardson Securities, and finally the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS). What defined his life, however, was his love for his wife, Isabel, and his children. Retirement gave him time to spend the warm months at his cherished country home, with Isabel and a succession of dogs. He also enjoyed travel, whether back to his beloved England to visit family, to Europe or to the Caribbean. He will be remembered and missed for his sense of humour, his encyclopedic knowledge and the warmest of hearts. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 1, with a reception to follow. If desired, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be appreciated. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
