I was unaware of Dr. Mandarino's passing at the time and extend my sorrow for your loss to family and friends. Dr. Mandarino hired me and I remember Ivy Allen in Human Resources informing me after the interview and job offer that Dr. Mandarino wondered if I might wear shoes rather than water buffalo sandals when I reported for work at the ROM. I simply cannot overstate what a wonderful experience working in his department and knowing Joe and his family was for me.

Dear Joan and family, Memories of times with Joe at Michigan Tech are a happy part of my life - the trips out on Keweenaw and the constant humor in our dorm room, including keeping a turtle in the bathtub. We met last by accident at the Sorbonne. Our love to all of you. Phil Ellsworth

My Dad died almost 40 years ago. His passing was noted in the Sunday Church bulletin, but there was nothing much said in the service. It was an old Ukrainian cleaning lady that blubbered with me out front of the Church following, but it was somehow a wonderful way to say good-bye. My Mom sprinkled his ashes in our garden. I hope you all have a grand service of remembrance tomorrow with appropriate good-byes. Best wishes, David and Cheryl Loaring

I would like to send my condolences to the Mandarino family on this sad occasion. I studied under Joe at U of T and later worked for him at the ROM for a few years. I remember Joe as a kind and patient man who encouraged my love of mineralogy. He always had a good joke for us at lunch time at the ROM. Although I haven't seen Joe for a few years, I have occasionally called him and tapped into his wisdom when some mineralogical puzzle comes up in my work as a geologist. I still consider Joe a mentor, the best boss I ever had and a friend. I will miss him. My sympathies to the Mandarino family, Rob Falls

We offer our our most sincere sympathy to the Mandarino family. We did not know Mr Mandarino in a personal manner bought often heard of his accomplishments from one of his "unique brood of children" namely Jay and Catherine AKA as Mrs Mandarino.
