Unfortunately, I was just informed today (Feb.2) of John's passing. I am very sorry to lose an old colleague. I joined with John as one of the founding directors of The Canadian Centre for Philanthropy and worked with him for many years. I deeply regret we had not been in touch these past few years. John was an important player in advancing the charitable and philanthropic sector in Canada. He will be missed.

Dear Joan: I was privileged to know John for many years and was always grateful to know him and benefit from his encyclopedia knowledge of charity and non-profit law. He was the leader in the field for many years, but, to talk to him, one would never feel that this humble man was a real giant in his field. We have all benefited from knowing him, being taught by him and being exposed to his views. We will all miss him. John Hamilton

Dear Joan and family, I wanted to write to express to you how sorry I was to learn of John’s passing but also to share with you how much I have held John in high esteem as a mentor over the years. John has been recognized as one of the founders, if not the founder of charity law in Canada. When I started to practice in 1980 with an interest in charity law, I would often refer to seminar materials on charity law that John had organized on behalf of the Ontario Bar Association. Through John’s selfless involvement in the Canadian Center for Philanthropist (where a library has been named in his honor) and The Philanthropist, he has been instrumental in expanding the knowledge base of charity law for lawyers across Canada. John was a true visionary who knew what had to be done to promote charity law in Canada and how to get it done. John will be greatly missed but fondly remembered by the charity law bar across Canada. In deepest sympathy, Terrance Carter

Dear Joan: Please accept my sincere condolences. John will be remembered not only for his extraordinary contributions to the profession, to philanthropy, and to charitable projects, but also for his humanity. As a consequence of the active involvement of each of us in OBA over the past few decades, our paths crossed on a regular basis. One of the most treasured events would be at our annual OBA Past Presidents Dinner. When I entered the legal profession, women were not always a welcome addition to the legal community. That John appeared to take my active participation in OBA for granted, was, to me a significant compliment. It personified his generosity of spirit and humanity on a most personal level. John will be missed, not only for the contributions he made to our profession, but because he was a revered member of the profession and of his community of friends. With warmest regards, Erica

Dear Mrs. Hodgson: On behalf of the Trustees and Trustees Emeriti of The Quetico Foundation, we would like to express our sincerest sympathy to you and your family on the passing of our dear Trustee and friend, John. As you well know, John continued to be an active and committed supporter of The Quetico Foundation for over 23 years – right up until his final days. We are so grateful for his significant contribution to the success and culture of the organization over his many years as a Trustee. He was instrumental in both guiding the strategic and program direction of the Foundation into what it has become today, and in imparting his vast institutional and historical memory into our thinking, ensuring that our roots and origins were always foremost in our minds. John also acted as an ambassador for the Foundation with his many colleagues and friends, and through his tireless efforts enabled us to broaden our focus and our reach, embarking on new programs and activities which have enriched our mission and furthered our purpose in meaningful ways. In spite of his continuing law practice and vast array of charitable involvements, John always made every effort to attend our meetings and events, fully engaged in a manner suggestive of someone who had this one and only singular focus. We were so grateful for his commitment and dedication. John was admirable as an individual and as a professional. His intellect, wisdom, wit, and generous spirit never wavered, and was inspiration to us all. It is with fond memories that I reflect on the times I spent with him in his office, reviewing archived Foundation files, listening to his infallibly detailed historical reflections, while enjoying his gracious offering of a perfect, customized John Hodgson lunch. He will be missed. It is truly sad when Trustees such as John pass along, for we feel as if we have lost a piece of who we are. We are comforted, however, in knowing that John’s contribution to sustaining the spirit of the Foundation, upholding its proud history and ensuring its promising future, will live on - and for that we are eternally grateful. Again, on behalf of all of the Trustees and Trustees Emeriti of the Board of Directors of The Quetico Foundation, we extend our deepest sympathies to you and your family. John was an admirable gentleman who will be sadly missed by his many friends and colleagues at The Quetico Foundation. He touched all of our lives in so many ways. Yours sincerely; Cam Clark Chair Glenda McLachlan Executive Director

To Joan and family, I had the pleasure and honour to work with John, first at Blakes, and then because of his encouragement, as editor of The Philanthropist, an undertaking that introduced me to John's world and expertise, and which gave us common ground to stay in touch ever since. He was witty, kind, courteous and intensely curious. May we all be remembered as he is.

Wednesday, January 26, 2011
In tribute to John Hodgson the Ontario Bar Association and Canadian Bar Association Charity and Not-For-Profit Sections will publish the following article in the Charity Talk Newsletter of the Canadian Bar Association. In Memoriam: John M. Hodgson, Q.C. Lawyers in the charity and not-for-profit section were greatly saddened to hear of the passing of John M. Hodgson, a leader in the charity and not-for-profit bar on January 24, 2010. After serving for three years overseas and in Italy with the 48 Highlanders, John returned to Canada and practiced in the areas of trusts, estates and charity law for 65 years at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP. He was known to his colleagues as a true gentleman who always had time for staff and lawyers alike. A few highlights of John’s outstanding contributions to the sector include chairing the project to establish the original National Committee on Charitable Organizations of the Canadian Bar Association. He was President of the Canadian Bar Association (Ontario) in 1971. John was active in the organization and development of various charitable organizations and foundations. John co-founded the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy, now known as Imagine Canada. He was the first President of the Centre from 1981-1986. He was a founder of "The Philanthropist", a journal on charitable studies and a member of its editorial board from 1972. John initiated the Charitable Mosaic conference. John was a recipient of the Law Society Medal from the Law Society of Upper Canada. The John Hodgson Library Collection at Imagine Canada was named to recognize John’s contributions to initiating its financing and redevelopment. The Ontario Bar Association in conjunction with Associated Medical Services Incorporated created the AMS/John Hodgson Award to recognize John Hodgson’s long standing contribution to AMS and the charitable community. We are truly fortunate to have had John as a part of the Charity and Not-for-profit Section from its inception. John Hodgson was a pleasure to know and his legacy will live on through the ongoing contributions of the organizations he founded.

Dear Mrs. Hodgson: Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your dear husband, John. I am a lawyer and like John, a past President of the CBAO. From my earliest days as a lawyer I saw John as one of the great leaders and gentlemen of the legal profession. He always spoke with dignity and thoughtfulness. He treated younger lawyers with great respect and interest. In every way he was a true professional. We will miss him deeply. As a leader in the professional organizations of the bar, John's greatest achievement was the establishment of Continuing Legal Eduction. He literally created it, within the CBAO. Now Continuing Legal Education is provided by many legal organizations, including the Law Society, but it was not so back then. For this contribution, all the lawyers in Ontario owe John a huge debt of gratitude. Yours sincerely, Tom Heintzman

I am acquainted with John only professionally. As a past President of the Ontario Bar Association, I found his company genial and entertaining. As a lawyer, I retained John in trust litigation as an expert, as he was the undisputed giant in the field. We are poorer for his loss. The profession and I are richer for having known and worked with him. Jamie Trimble, OBA President, 2008-09

Dear Joan and the family of John Hodgson I heard and read with sadness about John's passing and extend my heartfelt condolences to all of you. I knew John through CBAO-OBA at first and but over the last several years, we always stopped to chat whenever we saw one another in the PATH downtown. He was a legend at the Bar Association for his vision and leadership in the establishment of the Continuing Legal Education Committee. Although my involvement in CLE Committee was many years later, John's vision played an important role in a central role of the Bar Association. John's expertise in the law of charities and in his service to pro bono causes was impressive and inspiring He was always available whenever I called him with a question. I was also touched that he noticed and had kind words about my daughter, who is an associate at Blakes since 2002, even though she practices in another area of law. I am better for having known John Hodgson and will always remember him. May all of us live as long and accomplish as much as John did.

I wanted to pass along to the family my deepest sympathy. I have known John since I was a student at Blake Cassels more than forty years ago and have had the privilege of working with him on charity issues for almost as long. To me, he will always be the "dean" of Canadian charity law. I particularly value the time we spent at the last time we met at the John Hodgson award dinner eighteen months ago. He and his contribution to the law will not be forgotten
