Dear Dorothy and family. With heartfelt sorrow over your loss of such a wonderful man. It was through my late father James Bessey (Canadian Artist) how I came to know the Senator, and his kindness to me and our family has never been forgotten. My lunch with him in the Parliamentary dining room, and personal letter of reference from him , of which I still have the original, will always remain a cherished memory. Unfortunately I am unable to attend the funeral Dorothy however, you all will be thought about today and certainly, as the Senator was such an important figure in the history of our country his Greatness will always be admired and the love you held for each other admired and upheld. Sincerely, Kay and Peter, and June Bessey with Love....

I knew Senator Davey from an executive office I worked at many years ago. He was always so kind and had a wonderful smile which he was quick to share. I still have the letter he sent me congratulating me on my marriage. A letter is such a small thing but one of the ways he obviously reached out to people and endeared himself to them. I lost my Mother on January 5, 2011 to Alzheimer's and know what a terrible disease it is. My sympathies go out to his family and friends.

How sad he would be to see the sorry state of the party today. It says a lot about a person who can be "true to his school" and Keith's devotion to our alma mater North Toronto Collegiate Institute was echoed in his devotion to Canada, to Toronto, to his family, to his colleagues and to his friends. Into everyone's life a little rain must fall and when it originated from The Rainmaker we felt blessed. I regret not being able to attend Keith's funeral service and would like to convey my deepest sympathy to his family with a big hug to Dorothy and Catherine. John Dawe

Hello Ian and Family. I met your Dad a number of times in the old V&B days through Terry O. He was nicer and more respectful than he had to be towards a young, wet behind the ears, up and comer. Years later, I joined the Argo's and was surprised to receive a letter of congrats from Keith. To this day, I still keep that letter in my desk to remind me that no matter where you are in the pecking order, simple gestures can have a life long impact. Sorry for your loss.

Dear Family members of the late Keith Davey, O.C. It was with great sadness that I learned of Keith's passing. He was such a wonderful guy and made a difference in my life. We met shortly after he became National Director of the Liberal Party. I was then campaign Director of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party, and a young lawyer. Keith was a constant source of inspiration and encouragmemt. He persuaded me to get involved in federal Liberal politics and campaigns and I soon became a member of the National Campaign Committee though out the 1970's. I got to know him so much better through those years. Keith's leadership, influence, insight and vision had a great impact on me. But it was his friendship, energy, understanding and loyalty, though, that set him apart. And no reference of him would be complete without mentioning how I enjoyed his sense of humour. All these qualities combined, contributed to the great success of the party over many years. I really do not know what we would have done without him. How fortuneate I was that Keith passed my way and touched my life. Please accept my deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolence. David Mann 50 McCurdy Drive Chester, NS B0J 1J0

Dorothy: I was privileged to be involved in Keith's care in his latter years. He contributed so much to Canada through his life of service in politics; he was a Canadian icon. Your steadfastness to Keith during his years at Belmont was inspirational. And your caring for Keith extended to the rest of Belmont House. I remember the birthday cake for Keith that was shared with the entire floor; the wheelchair that would be given to someone in need. I think Keith would have been fully supportive. Keith was very lucky to have you.

Dear Dorothy, Doug, Ian and Catherine: Keith was a delight to know. A great man who had "the common touch". He used to thrash me (and most everyone) at pingpong at Arundel Lodge when I worked there as the "garbageman" in 1970 and 71. We kept in touch over the years as I 'progressed' from garbageman to student at Carleton, to Parliament Hill reporter, to news director at CKEY Toronto and then on to being a political staffer and later a communications consultant. I fondly recall the famous Park Plaza breakfasts. His advice was always sound, be it personal or political. I was glad to see the letter from John Laschinger and the columns in the Star by Richard Gwyn and today, Bob Hepburn. He deserves all this recognition and more. His report on mass media continues to stand as an excellent piece of work, and provides us with a snapshot of the history of media ownership in Canada. I will always remember his enthusiasm and sense of humour along with his wise counsel and his friendship. My thoughts are with you and your families. Jim Maclean

It was a privilege to know, learn from and be a friend of such a remarkable Canadian as Keith Davey. As a onetime fellow political warrior myself, Keith’s strategic brilliance and sheer wizardry in politics was simply awesome to behold! The warmth of his personality, his humour, his respect for others, his compassion, his baseball passion, and his joie de vivre were catchy too. But my fondest memories of Keith were during the first few years after he left the Senate, when he had time to do what he loved: seeing Keith walking and talking with Dorothy while holding hands on a warm summer evening near my home on Yonge near Summerhill; chatting with Keith about politics or baseball over coffee or lunch in Yorkville; or enjoying a Blue Jays game with Keith and “the boys”. He will be sadly missed, but I am consoled by knowing he is no longer suffering from that terrible disease. My deepest sympathy to Dorothy and the whole family.

Keith Davey's long, despicable illness and passing has left me with a deep indelible sadness. He was a friend and a mentor. He was the voice of the Liberal Party. He was the glue that kept the Party focussed. He was the individual that encouraged participation in Party events and Party ideas. It was because of Keith Davey that press reports referred to the Liberal Party as the most successful political party in the western world. He was a gregarious, friendly, kind and considerate person. His enthusiasm and intellectual energy were infectious. As an innovator he was the first to use polling to create election strategy in Canada and, he was the one who appointed me as the Liberal Party pollster. I also worked with him on the Senate Mass Media Task Force. It was a pleasure to work with him as he always saw the glass half full. I never knew Keith to be in a negative frame of mind. He was a man who attracted talent and those who worked with him wanted to be associated with him. He was bigger than life. And, what a sense of humor. Whatever the circumstance Keith had a funny story to tell. He loved his kids and he adored Dorothy. That love affair was beautiful to observe. He never stopped talking about Dorothy. Keith was generous with his time. He helped many people and took his parliamentary duties seriously. He was the ultimate parliamentarian because he helped anybody who asked. He taught me a fundamental value in life and that is that you go home with the person that brung ya. There was no more loyal person to his friends, family or the Liberal Party. His ideals will never be lost and those who worked with him will have the privilege of remembering forever his brilliance and good nature.

Mr Davey was one of the most compassionate hard driving bright, intelligent men that I have ever worked with. No one ever questioned that he was a Liberal and a Canadian. His mind worked all of the time and he seemed to be always counting votes riding by riding as we talked. He wanted to know how the campaign was going no matter how large or small the details. Keith wanted success. To win was his passion and it was his goal. There will only ever be one Keith Davey. His political life was full to the overflow and he lived every hour completely squeezing out more seconds of a minute than anyone else was able. How he retained so many details through the campaign was to be admired. It was a honour to have been associated with him during the elections because he cared for the fabric that makes us Canada and he wanted the best for all Canadians. Our sincerest sympathy to all of the Davey Family. May all of the numerous warm fond memories of his life and your loving interaction bring you solace during this time of sadness and reflection as we enter the celebration of his life for ever and ever. To the Davey family: I was a much younger office boy at the Star in the early 1960's and had the pleasure to meet Scotty. Some years later I met the Senator via my good friend John Gordon, Walter's son and my father, Edward Carter. I recall a coffee at the old Westbury hotel with the Senator. I desperately wanted to work on the Hill. Keith suggested that I should be a Liberal candidate - always the salesman. He was an inspiration and the role model for generations of political junkies. My deepest condolences to all of the family. I remember Senator Davey best for his sense of humour and his superb diplomacy. He was larger than life and what an impression he made striding down the halls of the Langevin Block when he came to have a "chat" one of his boys - Tom Axworthy, Peter Larsen, Jeffrey Goodman or Dennis Mills. The stories that followed were second to none. Many have tried, but none will ever fill his shoes. He was the one and only "Rainmaker".

When I was just a young sprat and lately swung to the Liberal party from the CCF (by virtue of getting old enough to vote), I was privileged, due to my recent move from Winnipeg to Toronto and my acquaintance with once-mentor Tom Kent, to be able to work in Ottawa HQ with Keith on the 1963 election, including the Truth Squad and our other little gems of antics which won us a minority government, one of the most productive in Canada's history. He was mentor, friend, idol, and educator in the wiles of the world and politics, and his death is a personal heart-breaker and a great loss to the country. My condolences to the family and his many friends inside and outside the party. I'm still working for a Liberal government, now in the York-Simcoe riding.
