Uncle Alan was my late father John Warren's younger brother. Uncle Alan and I used to get together a few times a year, usually at the Four Seasons, for dinner and lively conversation. On one of these occasions he was telling me about the basic training he had taken when he had enlisted in the armed forces, and he demonstrated for me the proper technique for lobbing a hand grenade out of a trench: straight arm, over the head, and a 180-degree pivot on the braced back leg. I filed this away in the "You Never Know When You Might Need To..." section of my brain. Several months later, my partner and I were watching a World War II movie on TV. In one scene, the Allied soldiers were trapped in a trench, and sure enough one of them pulls a grenade off his belt, yanks the pin, and hurls the grenade at the enemy -- but with his elbow bent!! I leapt off the couch and yelled at the screen, "Hey! That's not how you do it! My uncle taught me how to throw a grenade, and you don't bend your arm!" Uncle Alan got a big kick out of this when I told him about it -- he found the whole thing quite funny. I will miss him, and our get-togethers.

On behalf of Lynda and I, please accept our sincere condolences on the passing of your father and grandfather We have many memories of both your parents, and it goes without saying the tremendous effort Alan put into the success of Canadian Tire. Over the past few days I have thought about many talks Alan and I had. My career in Canadian Tire has certainly been helped along through the experience gained from his talks. Canadian Tire was a better business because of Alan. Brian Draves

Would you please pass on my condolences to the family of Mr. Warren? I worked for him for two or three summers in North Bay, while studying in the winter at U of T. My memories of him were of him walking through the store every day, greeting every employee by name, and taking a little time with each of us, to be sure he understood fully what was going on in his business at every level. He made sure we went to all the training programs, and that we were genuinely able to help the customers who came in. He taught me more about business by his example than any college course ever could have done, and I have always been grateful for that. I worked at the store when Hugh Rorison was the manager, and later Ron Doty. Beb Serre was my supervisor, Cara worked upstairs in the office alon with her mother. I remembe Larry's first office, up on the mezzanine at the back. Cara, of course, was a dish, and the hearthrob of all the young guys in the store. Gren Lenox fixed the small motors, lawn eqpt, etc and I worked in plumbing, selling pumps, lawn mowers, tillers etc. It was my introduction to sales, coupled inextricably to service and I like to think that's still what I'm best at, although I have had my own business for a few years now. It was Mr. Warren who gave me the motivation to get into business, and understand that it was an honourable and good thing. He was a very special man, and I always respected him. Sandra, I am so sorry for your loss. We were trying to find your dad's phone number recently to see how he was doing. We were shocked to see the notice. Unfortunately, our mother just passed away as well and we truly understand how difficult this is, but are trying to celebrate her wonderful life as I am sure you are celebrating the one lived by your dad. I certainly missed his company when my mom's treatment was stopped.

My deepest condolences. My mother Mary, sister Rosalyn and myself only got to know Allen recently at Princess Margaret and we were taken with what a lovely, kind gentleman he was. He made a difficult process unexpectedly pleasant, bringing much joy to my mother while she sat waiting her turn. My family is very sorry for your loss, more poignant at this time of year, but always difficult to lose such a fine man who must have been a great source of joy in the family.

Please accept our condolences on behalf of the Baycrest Memory Clinic treatment team. We realize that it is never easy to lose a parent or grandparent, no matter at what age. Although we only had a brief time to got to know Mr. Lawrence Alan Warren, it was clear that he was a dynamic personality with great achievements, some of which obtained with hard work, persistence and perseverance, who was (and is) of large significance to the family. We can all learn from him and incorporate his values, and in this way a part of him will live on in us.
