My sincere condolences to all of Miss McCarthy's family and friends .I got to know Doris when I was a gallery worker for many years and always admired her as a beautiful person and artist. Miss McCarthy was always gracious and kind regardless of your position in life! She was the most approachable artist I ever met! Today I have three daughters and many times refer to Doris's life as someone to admire and emulate as a role model.I'm sure Doris's energy and spirit will continue to touch many of us in a positive way . Thank you Doris for touching my life . Roger and family

To Family & Friends of Doris - I am re-reading "The Good Wine" - because in my memory, Doris IS the 'Good Wine'. I know she was deeply loved by her students. I wonder what happened to a student of mine, whom she and Virginia Luz nurtured - an extremely talented boy of 19 yrs; who had hearing/speech disabilities in the late 1960's. His name was Bill Edmunds and if it hadn't been for Doris, he would never have got through Art History! She called me one day and asked if I thought a scrapbook might be good for Bill instead of an essay. A Visual Essay - brilliant! I heard later that he graduated from Central Tech Art Special and went on to graduate from the Ontario College of Art.

Please accept my condolences, on behalf of myself, and especially on behalf of my late cousin, Leslie John Collins. Leslie (born in Toronto 1905, died in Toronto 1988) was a close friend of Doris. Apparently the two of them often went on art excursions together, and socialized ("went to the pictures"). They were in many of the same classes together at the Ontario College of Art, 1928-30. They shared the same visions of the world and of art. Leslie, like Doris, devoted his life to landscape painting. He never married. Inside his old art portfolio, there were some small prints created and signed by Doris. Leslie and Doris had 'traded' small pieces of art to remember each other. Memorial donations to honour Doris, will be made to the Doris McCarthy Gallery, and, also to the Ontario S.P.C.A., as Doris also shared concern and kinship with animals. From Nancy Hull (cousin of Leslie)

I consider myself very fortunate to have Doris as a teacher at Central Tech. We enjoyed her classes immensely, her critiques were done honestly but in a kind, encouraging manner. She is an inspiration to generations of young artists especially women. Every spring we looked forward to seeing her and her new work at her annual show. Doris always seemed to remember her students names even if they hadn't met in 30 or more years and greeted us with kindness and a hint of humour in her eyes. She will be missed.

I did not know Doris personally but I met her twice publicly including visiting her wonderful home (built by herself and friends!) during one of her shows. She has always been an inspiration to me as an artist and as a woman living her life her way. She had a lovely open face. It seemed eager and curious to the end. Now that's how I'd like to be at the end of my life. What a role model, what an artist! Please accept my condolences, and may your many memoiries support you during this time. Sincerely, Patricia Reason

i remember Doris McCarthy as one of my art teachers at Central Tech. To me she was a whirlwind of energy. So much of who she was and what she taught will stay with me forever. She made art history come alive with a passion I had never before or since experienced. I marvelled at her determination and perseverance. Cold winter days seemed not to touch her. I remember how she would take our class outside on these blistery cold days, snow on the ground ( I don't remember where we were suppose to go ) but there she was, barely covered and bare feet in summer sandals, marching along with her ponytail swinging. What a delight!
She also invited our whole class to her home one warm sunny day. There we could drink in the atmosphere of her home, her artifacts and explore the Bluffs.
I am lucky to have had the opportunity to cross paths with her, and she continues to be an inspiration even now that she is gone.

I pass on my sympathy to all the family. . . Doris's father was my Mother's Uncle. My parents met at Uncle George's home. My Father worked as a young engineer with Uncle George. When my sister , Marjory Whitelaw became ill, I phoned Doris and we had a long conversation. It was at that time -2000 ,that she recalled her accident with her car as she looked at the moon. She visited us in St Lambert Que when I was young . She was on her way to the Gaspe driving a car with a rumble seat. I was so impressed!Molly

To a kid growing up in the eclectic "Bluffs" community of the 1950's, Doris stood out as one who lived life her way. Almost daily, Doris would rattle past us giggly girls in her old Jeep, fearlessly disappearing over the Meadowcliffe hill.Little did she know that her independent spirit would be a true inspiration to those of us who thought that only Annie Oakley and Nancy Drew could live the high life. In an earlier time, she gave ongoing joy to a similar group of young women, including my mother Margaret, when she undertook to corral their energies in her famous theatrical productions at St. Aidans. Her spirit will outlive us all. Diane Coates Milne in my own Fool's Paradise on the lake in Conway Ontario

I have never forgotten Doris since that time when she sat behind me in Professor Patenall's Shakespeare lectures at Scarborough College. That was about 1977. I was delighted to see a note about Professor Patenall in Ninety Years Wise - complete with photographs. Marvelous! She has been an inspiration to me as she has to many, I am sure. She lived life well and to the fullest. I have all of her books and few of her prints and will continue to draw inspiration from those. I feel most grateful that Doris once passed through my life. Heartfelt condolences to the family, Ann-Marie Miller

Dear Family and Friends of Doris McCarthy, We were saddened to hear of the death of Doris and yet thankful for her having been given such a long and creative life. We met Doris on a few occasions, including a talk given in Cobourg and at a show opening in 1994 here in Haliburton where we now live. We were enthralled and touched by her contagious zest for life and by her deep dedication to her work. As I write these words I can see her inspiring painting of peat bogs in Ireland, painted I believe in 1951. We have owned this lovely work for many years now and can honestly say it lights up every single day, it is so beautifully conceived and carried out. Doris has secured an important and lasting place in the history of art in Canada and the world and she will be the inspiration for artists for generations to come. Hugh & Pamela
