Howard, I cannot imagine our world without Wally Ballou. It just doesn't seem right. I have so many terrific memories of you over the past 35 years and each and every one of them brings a smile to my face. You had an amazing sense of humour and could bring laughter to each room you entered. From the time you first walked into our house as an articling student for Humphrey, Locke, Ecclestone & Kane you were part of our family. As the years past, nothing changed...you still made us laugh and you were still a member of the “Kane Family”. While there are many funny moments we shared over the years, I will most remember you asking me to go for a walk as you learned I was not planning on going to university once I graduated high school. I was only 17 at the time but I remember it as if it were yesterday. It was the only time in my life where your sense of humour took a backseat to a heartfelt “big brother” conversation. As a teenager, I thought I knew what was best for me and while you did not tell me what to do; you challenged me and gave me a lot to think about. Well, as you know, I ended up going to university and it was while attending the University of Toronto that I found a passion for sports and business management. Some 30 years later I continue to love what I do ... so thank you Wally. You have played an instrumental and important role in my life. I value your friendship more than you will ever know. Give my love to Dad, Gordie, Nan, Pop and Uncle Steve. No doubt you all have lots to talk about and lots of jokes to share. In as much as it hurts that you are no longer with us, there is a sense of peace that the people I respected and loved so much are back together again and keeping an eye on me from above. Thank you Wally for enriching my life....I will never forget you! Love Wendy

I first met Howard after he articled and was working at Humphrey, Locke, Ecclestone and Kane and I was a student at U of T and living in the basement of #3 Sultan Street. As anyone who knew my father, everyone including Howard had a nickname...my dad's nickname for Howard was "Wally Ballou". It was only fitting that Howard give me a nickname and called me "Trance" said in his best imitation of WC Fields. I will always have fond memories of Wally with his old trenchcoat, his cigars, his old Volvo, his jokes and his great laugh. He always had the time to talk and listen, was a loyal friend to my family and had a very good heart. When I think of #3 Sultan Street, I will always remember Wally as one of the great "characters" in my life. Say hi to my dad and Steve when you see them....between jokes of course.

Howard was one of the most interesting characters I met in my career. He was one tough customer - but always fair - and always ahead of the game. His humour was about as low key as it gets...but always hit the mark! I enjoyed his company immensely and know he will be missed.

The colours have passed their peak, Lac Bois Franc is almost frozen, and the loon has left. It's a good time for a fire. Your presence is missed. Linie
