Obituary of Guy Morton
Guy Macdonald Morton
Guy passed quickly but quietly at home in Toronto on Tuesday, October 19, 2010. He is mourned by his wife of 51 years, Fiona (nee Ross), his two sons, Iain (Kym) and Sandy (Marya), and five grandchildren, Lucy, Oliver, Kenna, Evan and Eadon. Guy was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1931, educated at the University of St Andrews, served in the Royal Navy and immigrated to Canada in 1956. He was a pioneer in computer systems and design and worked with IBM. He was recognized for his innovation in file sequencing and organizing geodetic databases with the eponymous Morton order and numbering. Guy and a few others of like mind left IBM in 1968 to create Systems Dimensions Limited (SDL) of Ottawa, entering into the new field of computer services. As second careers, Guy and Fiona owned and operated Tinkers Gourmet Cookware. Guy's family wishes to thank the Neurological and Cardiac units of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto and the members of its Brain Sciences Research Program who attended to Guy for much of his later years. Guy enjoyed golf, bridge, cryptic crosswords and his grandchildren immensely. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sunnybrook Foundation would be appreciated. A scattering of remains at Toronto Necropolis, 200 Winchester Street, Toronto will take place on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 3:00 p.m., with a reception in Guy's memory to follow. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.
