We were saddened to hear about the passing of Don. Nichola and I discussed on the weekend how much he enjoyed to talk politics regardless of what the issue was, and which side you were on. John Freick today said it best when he talked about how engaged Don was when it came to so many aspects of life. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all. We would be honoured to make a donation to the The Arthritis Society of Ontario.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I worked with Don at Esso and found him to have a rare drive for excellence yet compassion for people. I remember the night he took a group of us to see Cher at the Air Canada Centre as part of a customer function, took a picture of us and then afterwords Photo Shopped in Cher to look like she was in our group. Still have the picture in my den. I will miss him and will make a donation to the Arthritis Society to honour him. Blair

To: Yvonne and the Donald E McGregor family Oct 3/10
I have been thinking about Don's life and what it has meant to me and to others.
Don moved the yardsticks for what a human can endure. A comparative effort may be the survivors of the holocaust camps.
I presume his first attack was when he could not get out of bed before an Exxon board meeting in NYC when he was 35. I think only someone who was on a company's fast track, golden-haired, up-and-comer could appreciate how important that board meeting was to Don. Don set his life-long goal of being President of Imperial Oil when he was 12 years old. No one on this earth would have wanted that board meeting opportunity more, and no one of on this earth would have been better prepared than Don was that day. Yet the disease prevented him from getting out of bed. The disappointment must have been so severe, that for a normal person, that would have been debilitating in it-self.
Then to spend weeks trying to find suitable drugs to allow some normalcy to his life, and the hospital-home sick days away from the office, allowing him more time to consider that the disease would likely prevent him from achieving his lifelong goal of being President of Imperial Oil, would only serve to reinforce his disappointment all the more.
The miracle of this man Don McGregor was that when some normalcy to his health did return, he put all that disappointment behind him, and charged again toward his life-long goal of being President of Imperial Oil.
He had that rarely seen ability to: 1) put his mind in a different place, 2) ignore the pain and the probable outcome that it was unlikely that the company would make him President given his disease, and 3) to charge ahead as if nothing had changed.
I don't think any of us can really relate to another's issues unless we have experienced a similar event: Barb Feick made me realize how chronic and severe Don's pain was and how debilitating it could become. I know how important that first board meeting was to Don, as I had a similar experience at a different, much smaller company.
I would like to think Don was unique amongst men in this world, in his ability to charge on under any circumstance, but probably there are similar stories from holocaust camp survivors and a few others.
To me though, Don was a miracle man and it was an honour to know him well, to call him my best friend outside my marriage, and I will never forget his example of never giving up, no matter what.
Your friend,
Jim Alexander

Dear Yvonne, I was terribly saddened to hear about Don's passing away and wanted to extend my deepest sympathies to you and your family.Although Don had been ill for some time, his death is still a great shock. I truly loved and admired Don. He was my hero.Even though he was in constant pain from his arthritis for many years, never once did I ever hear him complain, "why me". Instead, he always greeted me with a big smile and a twinkle in his eye. I admired his dry sense of humor and his zest for life. I admired his razor sharp mind and excellent commercial judgment.I admired his intellectual honesty and clear sense of right and wrong. For these and many other reasons, I will sorely miss my friend Don McGregor, but I will never forget him. It is very difficult to know what to say at such a sad time, but I did want you to know that our prayers and thoughts are with you. Again, my deepest sympathies to you and your family. Sincerely, Irwin Levowitz
