BLACKHALL, Victor Charles
1911 - 2010
Peacefully on Friday, August 27, 2010 at the Veterans wing, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto. Beloved husband of the late Doreen, loving father of Diane (Arnie) and Jim (the late Marilyn). Proud grandfather of Geoffrey, and step-grandfather to Diane. Predeceased by his parents, three sisters and brother. Fondly remembered by his sister-in-law Helene Mahaffey, his many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Vic participated in many sports over his lifetime including fencing, judo, horseback riding, canoeing, sailing, tennis, skiing, water skiing, golf and lawn bowling. He was a member of the RCYC, the Toronto Lawn Tennis Club, the Board of Trade, the Military Institute, Imperial Officers' Association and the Toronto Ski Club. He served as President of the Toronto Ski Club and was involved in the early development of Blue Mountain Resorts.
Vic started in the printing business as a salesman and held various positions in Blackhall and Company Ltd. including General Manager, Vice President and President. He also worked for the Crown Trust Company in financial and estate planning.
Vic was very proud to serve Canada during the Second World War in the Royal Canadian Navy. He attended officer training at Royal Roads in B.C. He saw action from 1942-1945 with the North Atlantic convoy escort groups. At the end of the war he had attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander, commanding the frigate, Joliette.
Vic and Doreen loved to travel. They went to many places in Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico and the U.S. His interest in history and her interest in different cultures led them on many adventures.
The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME - A.W. MILES CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2010. A Celebration of Victor's life will be held in ST. CUTHBERT'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 1399 Bayview Avenue on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. If desired, please consider a donation to Sunnybrook Foundation, Veterans Comfort Fund, 2075 Bayview Avenue, Toronto M4N 3M5.
