We first met George & Rose in Simcoe in 1970 I was then an ironworker foreman at Nanticoke, and George came by many mornings on his rounds. Even though he was the manager, he always spoke to us simple working men as if we were important members of his team. He was always straightforward with us, and as a result gained our deep respect. He was skilled at seeing ability in people and active in encouraging them to seek advancement. I know he helped not only me, but others as well, by giving us advice and chances to prove ourselves. With his help we went farther and accomplished more than we would have otherwise. To us he was a good manager, a good leader, and a good friend. He was a fine man and will be very much missed. We offer our heartfelt sympathies to his family. Gus & Doris Zielke

George could be scary, or so I saw from the reactions of those around me one summer at Pickering in the mid 70s - he made them nervous even when he was just hitting a few golf balls at lunchtime, much less when he came on an unannounced walk about but I knew he had a kind core he & Rose let his teenaged sons have a room in the basement of their home in Simcoe with only pillows for furniture, where the hard rock albums could be cranked way up, and where the door could be shut - even if a girl was in there with them... good thing, because otherwise George's snoring would have drowned out the music, and I'm talking Jethro Tull.... he could be startlingly honest, but with me at least, had good timing and I know he sincerely meant his comments to be helpful he clearly had the guts to do what he thought right…politically correct did not come into it he could enjoy being the outrageous curmudgeon he stayed unrelentingly disappointed and angry at stupidity, especially when manifested by politicians and others with good suits and no sense he earned the respect of many he was proud of his work but modest about his accomplishments he managed the many health challenges and setbacks he had to face with dignity and determination he acknowledged his luck and was generous with those who had less he knew about being poor and remembered kindness shown him he stayed interested in the world, and in the lives of his friends, he worried about his boys and did his best to help them even as adults, just as he did their aunt Betty he loved Rose to a degree that should stir in all of us a hope to be as loved I'm grateful and proud to have known him, and I know there's many a story from his life and its impact that will give us solace Diane Zielke
