Dear Hague family, I was so sorry to hear of your loss. I would like to express my condolences to your family during this difficult time. There is a promise in the Bible that I have found very comforting. At Isaiah 26:19 is says "Your dead ones will live. They will rise up." God promises that we will be able to see our dead loved ones again. He promises to restore them back to life right here on earth. I look forward to the fulfillment of this promise. I hope you may find comfort in this promise as well. With deep sympathy, Kerry

Donna, Bryan, Sylvia, Phil and Malcolm My deepest sympathies are with you at this time. I suspect that family aside I perhaps knew Ian almost as long as anyone. We first met when we were 13 or so I think and, having moved down from Birmingham, Ian appeared at Bancrofts School. We spent 5 years in the same house (North House) and in the same classroom's studying pretty much the same subjects - indeed I think we gave the school a special challenge when we became the first pupils to select what was then considered an odd A Level combination of Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Geography. Fortunately 4 of us chose the same route at the same time so the school moved the lesson plan around to accommodate us. Clearly good grounding for accountants as 3 of us went on to join big 8 firms (as they then were) - and as the finance director of listed companies using IFRS I have only occasionally not been delighted by the success Ian had on the standard setting side of the fence. As always at school, life was not just about studying. I seem to recall Ian and I built the cauldron for the witches in the school production of Macbeth - the wonders of chicken wire, paper, glue and black paint. We also plowed up and down the pool together on the school swimming team (Ian was always in the lead) and at home in Loughton proved at the Avenue tennis club that we were not the solution to the UK's lack of Wimbledon champions. Several years later, Ian was an excellent host when we arrived for two years in Toronto shortly after he had moved there. He did give me an odd education into North American sport - indoor international cricket at the Skydome and American Football in Buffalo (fun in August, brutally cold in a windy, snowy December). Regrettably in recent years our travel schedules only resulted in a number of nearly meetings - it was uncanny how whenever he was in London or I in Toronto the other was travelling. We always assumed we would manage it next time - its very sad that this will now never happen. With fond memories and all our love Doug & Rachel

To Ian's family, I was privileged to work with Ian for many years in our mutual efforts to improve Canadian, American, and international accounting standards. He was a joy to have as a colleague--forthright, brilliant, dependable, and effective. He was also a wonderful host in Toronto and a boon social companion when he and I found ourselves together in London, Oslo, New York, or wherever for an evening after a difficult international meeting. I am so sorry that his untimely departure has deprived you of all the future days you should have had together. I hope it is some consolation that his work will live on, for many decades to come, in better financial reporting throughout the world. Halsey Bullen FASB Senior Project Manager (retired)

Dear Mrs Hague I first got to know Ian some 16 years ago, via our mutual involvement in standard setting and we sat on various committees and working groups together. I was very sad to hear of his sudden illness and passing away. I will remember Ian as a kind, humble person with a ready smile and an easy, calm manner that others warmed to. He also had a great skill for standard setting, with a wealth of knowledge and experience and a real desire to seek out the best solution, sometimes in the face of much opposition. He will be missed by many, but none more than his family. And my heart goes out to you at this difficult time With deepest sympathy Sandra Thompson

Dear Donna and Bryan, We were so very sad to hear the death of cousin Ian, he was such a likeable person, I have known him all his life, he would visit our family in his early years with his Mum,Dad and brother Malcolm. When he moved to Canada he always kept in touch. He was such a thoughtful and kind person, sending postcards of the many places he had visited and not forgetting Birthdays and Christmas wishes. No words can express how much all the family here in Rothwell will miss him. Our thoughts are with you all at this very sad time. Love Ann,Peter and family

Dear Donna I was shocked and saddened to learn of Ian's illness and then, so quickly, his passing. I only knew Ian for about five years, again through standard setting. But in that short time I was taken by Ian's warmth and positive attitude. The standard setting community is a small one. And we have been lucky to have had Ian as one of our number. I attended the service last week, representing the IASB and IFRS Foundation. I am glad I made the journey. It gave me the opportunity to see parts of Ian's life outside of standard setting. I can only imagine the loss you and Brian must be feeling now. My deepest sympathy to you at this time. Alan Teixeira IASB Director of Technical Activities

To Donna and Bryan, this is a sad time for you both and we hope that all the shared memories of Ian will comfort you and enable you in the weeks ahead to celebrate all the happy times you shared and his fantastic achievements. As Ian’s cousin I have known him right from when he was a little boy. I remember the times our families would visit each other when he lived in Solihull. It was always a fun day out for us. Uncle Phil, Sylvia, Ian and Malcolm would regularly come and see us in Rothwell. We would have cricket games in our garden, silly games with clothes pegs and other games that would make Ian laugh. I have fond memories of him being enthralled with my train set, which we set out in the garden. We even filmed it on a home movie camera. Over the years we have noted Ian’s progress from schoolboy to an executive. Sandra and I remember the time when we visited you all during a holiday in Canada. It was lovely to see him so happy with his family and his life in North York. Ian would always keep in touch with his Uncle Walter and Auntie Kathleen (my Mum and Dad). They were very proud of him and always liked his letters, visits and the present of the Canadian Calendar at Christmas. Ian was a good, caring person and very much a gentleman. He obviously enjoyed his work but he still found time for his relatives here in England. We shall really miss him. John and Sandra Dainty

Dear Mrs Hague Brenda and I have known Ian for many years, stretching back to our involvement with the International Accounting Standards Committee and the G4+1 and more latterly the IASB. We were deeply saddened to learn of his passing. We will always remember Ian as a kind, softly spoken person with a warm smile and a twinkle in his eye. He was an outstanding standard setter. Many have tried their hand at this game but few really get it. Ian is one that did. He was thoughtful, articulate, independently minded, and, perhaps hardest of all, he was tolerant. Many is the time Ian has been on the end of criticism and complaints from colleagues and constituents alike, oftentime fierce, and we all admired the way he dealt it - listening closely and responding calmly. The standard setting fraternity has lost one of its best. Special people leave special legacies. We hope Ian's special footprint will be a comfort to you, your son and your family in this difficult time for you all. Warren and Brenda McGregor

I was very sorry to learn of Ian's illness and passing from a Canadian librarian colleague who had put me in touch with Ian several years ago when I was planning a program for the Special Libraries Association's conference when it was in Toronto. I wanted to do a program on international accounting and was in need of a speaker--willing to speak without compensation and at 7:30 a.m. to librarians. Several years of program planning had steeled me for rejection but when I called Ian he said he would be very happy to do so and his presentation was memorable, both for the content and also his personality. Between the time of our initial telephone conversation and the conference, I learned of his professional accomplishments, which were many. My sympathies go to his wife and son, his parents and other relatives, and his many friends and colleagues for their loss. I hope there is some comfort in knowing he was really was impressive and memorable even to those of us who only met him once. Dear Mrs Hague I first met Ian in 2006 when he joined the IFAC International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board's project to develop a public sector conceptual framework. Ian was a great contributor to the project and, in doing so, he promoted the relationship between the IASB and the IPSASB at a very important moment in the development of IPSASB. I will remain forever grateful to Ian for his great support of the IPSASB, of me, the then chairman, and of all his colleagues on the IPSAS Board and its staff. I remember Ian with great fondness. The ever present twinkle in his eye; the softness of his voice; the commonsense of his words; his diplomacy. Ian was a very good man and will be missed by all of us in the International Public Sector Accounting world. I send my heartfelt condolences to you and your family and, in doing so, I rejoice in the fact that I met Ian and knew him as a friend. Sincerely Mike Hathorn

FROM IAN'S PARENTS. We are most grateful for all the messages displayed in the Memorial Tributes. It is such a comfort to know that our son was held in such high regard. That he was cruelly cut down in the prime of his life is a burden very hard to bear. We shall always remember him as a loving, dutiful son who did his best to help his family, friends and colleagues wherever they were. Half of his life was spent with us in England where he excelled at school and university. In his spare time he acted as a Warrant Officer in charge of the R.A.F. section of his school's Combined Cadet Force and also as a Lifeguard at the local swimming pool. His sense of humour was with him right to the end. His passing has left a hole in all our lives that will never be adequately filled. We miss him dreadfully.

Like so many others, I was shocked to hear of Ian's illness and am immensely sad at his passing. I first met him at an IASC meeting in 1996 and our paths had crossed many times since then at the IASC and IASB. He was, of course, an outstanding standard setter, and he was always kind and helpful to me and all my colleagues and we valued his assistance enormously. But what I remember and treasure most are his warmth, friendliness and unfailing gentle humour. As I picture him now, I think of the friendly smile that was always in his eyes. It was always a pleasure to be with him. One of my happiest and most vivid memories of Ian goes back to an IASC Board meeting in Malaysia in 1998. This was held in a hotel set in a disused tin mine and it had the most wonderful outdoor swimming pool. It was an idyllic and tranquil setting and Ian and a small group of us found ourselves meeting in the pool every morning before breakfast. Others in the group were Rolf Rundfelt from Sweden,Albrect Ruppel from Germany and Etsuo Sawa from Japan. The quiet camaraderie of that particular occasion sticks in my memory, but it is also very typical of the many good times I spent with Ian. I can only imagine the pain Ian's family and friends must be feeling and I can only offer my heartfelt sympathy. I feel very lucky to have known Ian and I miss him greatly. He was one of the best.

I knew Ian as a fellow CICA employee, although in a different department. Whenever I did cross paths with him, I was pleased, and, I admit, a bit surprised, to find that he was a friendly, down-to-earth person who had a genuine interest in others. As an accountant deeply immersed in the arcane world of international standards, he could have been only that. But his interests clearly extended to the human realm, and conversations with him were a pleasure as a result. I remember talking with him at a CICA social event that took place on a sailboat in the Toronto harbour. I don’t recall the conversation details, but I know we weren’t talking about accounting. The sun was shining, the breeze was blowing, the water was sparkling, and what I remember is that I was sharing a moment with a cheerful, involved person who enjoyed talking, listening, and engaging with others. That’s how I will remember him.

I had the opportunity to come to know Ian as a member of the Accounting Standards Board over the last seven years, both as a professional and person. Ian's integrity, dedication, and genuine empathy for everyone he met were integral parts of both his professional and personal character. Very few are fully aware of the extensive contributions he made to accounting standard setting both nationally and globally; largely because he worked so competently, yet unobtrusively. We simply took for granted that Ian would deliver first class work at all times. Ian was invariably patient and supportive of all his colleagues. He brought a wonderful sense of humour to all our meetings. The remarkable courage he exhibited throughout this most recent battle has been inspirational. I am thankful for having known him.

I first met Ian at an IASC meeting somewhere in the world and have worked with him throughout my involvement with the Accounting Standards Board. I can still see his very special smile. I will remember Ian as a consummate professional, with quintessentially British politeness. I was thrilled with his most recent promotion and saddened that I would see and work with him less often because of it. I cannot believe he has left us. I will miss him terribly. Dear Mrs Hague The IASB and its staff were shocked and saddened to hear the news of Ian’s passing. We knew how ill he had been and how bravely you were all coping with such a terrible affliction. We have lost a good and loyal friend and a globally recognised brilliant accountant. I have known Ian for many years first as Chairman of the UK’s Accounting Standards Board, at G4+1 meetings and latterly as Chairman of the International Accounting Standards Board. I had a huge admiration for Ian both as a person and as a technical accountant. Indeed, as I’m sure you are aware, I tried to recruit Ian to join the IASB staff in a senior position shortly after the founding of the organisation. Not unnaturally, he was very reluctant to leave Canada and disrupt his family’s happy lifestyle. Much as I was disappointed by Ian’s decision I fully understood his position and asked the Canadian Board if, instead, Ian could work on some of our projects. This duly took place and Ian became a regular and popular presenter at our Board meetings in London. His cheery personality and sound technical background made him an ideal researcher and he was hugely respected by the Board. We were consequently horrified at the news of Ian’s illness. Obviously our shock was nothing compared to your own. I know words can be of little comfort to you at such a difficult time but, on behalf of the IASB and its staff, I wished to pass on our deepest sympathy. I hope before long, as Ian would wish, you will be able to look back at good times spent together and smile at the memories rather than feel the pain of parting. In the meantime, may I assure you that you and the family are very much in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time. Sincerely, David Tweedie
