I am sorry I was unable to attend Barbara's funeral, as I am in Kingston, Jamaica attending my uncle's funeral. Prof. Godard's class on 'the archive' was one of the most challenging classes I took during my Masters--not surprisingly, it was the most rewarding. I never forgot her encouragement, both personally and intellectually. She has left a wonderful legacy. No one who has ever met Barbara could forget her sharp intellect and her welcoming spirit. I will always remember her very warm welcome, both into her class and her home.

I am so saddened to hear of Barbara's passing. She was one of my professors at York 20 years ago, and set quite a challenge. It was an honour to attempt to meet it. We've bumped into each other in the years since, and it was always a rewarding experience. My world is now diminished knowing that those opportunities will never arise again. Barbara was brilliant, engaging, and a great contributor to the intellectual life of Canada. Thanks Barbara, for allowing me into your class, for introducing me to the writing of Nicole Brossard, and for being also, somehow, warm and fuzzy.

Prof. Emeritus Ben-Z. Shek, University of Toronto posted a condolence

Barbara Godard was one of the sharpest literary critics that I ever met in some 30 years teaching at the University of Toronto. Her swift mind was as fast as her rapid speaking style--jumping from one relevant commentary to another. Although officially a professor of English, her knowledge of French-Canadian or Québécois literature--my area of specialization--was very extensive and highly relevant. She gave praise in "Canadian Forum" magazine to my translation of Antonine Maillet's "Mariaagélas", and was a willing reader of parts of my 1992 book, "French-Canadian and Québécois Novels", for which I credited her in my acknowledgements. Barbara's death came as a real shock, since I was recently told by a mutual friend, Prof. Patricia Smart of Carleton University, that she was feeling and looking much better. Please accept my heartfelt condolences on your (and our) loss. Barbara will be long remembered!
